Comprehensive Consensus Statement
Outlines Management of Type 1 Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European
Association for the Study of Diabetes recently convened
a writing group to develop a complete report on the
management of type 1 diabetes in adults. The group, aware
of national and international guidance, aimed to discuss
current and future glycemic management strategies and
to highlight the major areas of diabetes care health care
professionals must consider for this population. The resulting
report includes a comprehensive look at type 1 diabetes,
including diagnosis and classification; management goals,
schedules, and tools; insulin and adjunctive therapies;
hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, and their treatment;
behavioral considerations with regard to nutrition, physical
activity, sleep, and other issues; psychosocial care and
social determinants of health; and care during pregnancy
and in special populations, including inpatient management.
The authors took care to highlight the unique burden type 1
diabetes management places on individuals with the disease
and the crucial importance of diabetes self-management
education and support.
This report, published jointly in Diabetologia and Diabetes
Care, represents the expert consensus opinion of the
authors, who considered both observational and clinical trial
findings, noted that " huge gaps exist in our knowledge in the
prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease, " and
concluded that " [p]eople with type 1 diabetes deserve better,
higher-quality research evidence on which to determine
optimal care. "
This consensus statement was presented at the ADA's virtual
81st Scientific Sessions in June, where comments were invited.
The final statement is available on the journal's website.
Special Section: The RISE Study-
More Insights into Type 2 Diabetes in
Youth and Adults
Diabetes Care recently published a special collection of
articles focusing on continued findings from the ongoing
RISE (Restoring Insulin Secretion) study, which was designed
in 2014. The RISE study aims to test whether β-cell decline
can be stopped in adolescents and adults with prediabetes
or early type 2 diabetes and represents a unique opportunity
to examine the differences in type 2 diabetes between
younger and older people. The special collection includes
a commentary and three original research articles offering
mechanistic insights into the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes
and potential treatment pathways for adolescents. It was
published in the September issue of Diabetes Care and is
also available on the journal's website.
Diabetes Care Symposium Examines
Diabetes and COVID-19 at 18 Months
The 2021 Diabetes Care Symposium, titled " Learning to
Minimize Risks for People with Diabetes in the COVID-19
Pandemic, " was presented as part of the ADA's virtual
81st Scientific Sessions in June. Presentations addressed
the link between diabetes and coronavirus disease 2019
(COVID-19) morbidity and mortality, the role of diabetes in
influencing COVID-19 risk, and the pandemic's impact on
people with diabetes.
Looking to the future, symposium faculty recommended
that longitudinal, retrievable public data be collected to
further differentiate the impact of COVID-19 on people with
type 1 versus type 2 diabetes and to contextualize data to
inform childcare, the return to school, and extracurricular
decisions for children with diabetes. They also stressed
the need for multidisciplinary care for people with diabetes
who contract COVID-19.
The Diabetes Care Symposium, hosted by the journal's
Editor-in-Chief, is an annual event that typically focuses on a
key issue or issues from the previous year. Three symposium
articles were accepted for presentation, published in the
September issue of Diabetes Care, and are also available
online as a special article collection.
Eye Health Education
Program Available for
Medical Office Staff
The American Diabetes Association's Focus on
Diabetes Initiative has created three educational
modules on diabetes and eye health especially
for medical office staff members. These free,
online presentations offer office staff in optometry,
ophthalmology, endocrinology, and primary care
clinic settings an accessible, informative overview
of the connection between diabetes and eye
health to better equip them in supporting patients'
proactive health care behaviors. Your office staff
can help to increase patient awareness and
engagement and share basic messages about
diabetes during clinic encounters. Encourage your
staff to sign up today. Learn more here.
