Special Section: Extended Observations
from the TODAY Study-Serious Later
Risks Associated With Type 2 Diabetes in
Adolescents and Young Adults
Diabetes Care recently published a special collection
of articles from the Treatment Options for Type 2
Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) study
highlighting the state of metabolic health in our
young and most vulnerable populations. The articles,
selected by the journal's editor-in-chief, examine
closely the effects of an increase in adolescent
obesity and the poorer outcomes that arise from
socioeconomic disadvantage.
The authors reveal many factors contributing to
the increase in diabetes and concomitant rise in
complications we see today, all of which warrant
further study and require adequate care models. Each
article in the collection offers an in-depth look at the
TODAY study data related to a specific outcome,
including retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy,
maternal and fetal complications, and health-related
quality of life. All of the articles underscore the specific
need for glycemic control in these populations. Taken
together, this timely collection provides a 360-degree
view of the challenges facing young people with
type 2 diabetes and paves the way for important
advancements in targeted treatment options and
interventions. The special section appears in the
May issue of Diabetes Care and is available online at
https://diabetesjournals.org/care.

Clinical Compendium: New Evidence-Based
Therapies for Complex Diabetic Foot Wounds
Earlier this year, the
American Diabetes
Association (ADA)
published the third in a
series of compendia on
the diabetic foot. The
two previous publications
focused on diagnosis and
management of diabetes
foot complications and
infections. In this latest
installment, the authors
look at developments
over the past decade in
therapies for complex diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).
The compendium opens with an overview of the
current state of diabetic foot care and a brief history
of oxygen therapy for the treatment of DFUs. It
then describes in detail the latest in topical oxygen
therapies. As the authors conclude, complications
are common and treatment is complex, but clinical
evidence is becoming exceedingly robust, and
innovation is inevitable.
Online access to this informative compendium is
free, supported by an unrestricted education grant
from AOTI. To access this and all ADA-published
clinical compendia, visit https://professional.
