ADA Develops New Resources Focusing on Key Nutrition Topics
Adhering to its mission of preventing diabetes and
improving the lives of all people affected by diabetes,
the American Diabetes Association (ADA) developed
a six-part series of nutrition videos and handouts
addressing popular nutrition topics.
Background
Through its work with the National Diabetes
Prevention Program (National DPP), the ADA
identified a need for supplemental materials that
addressed nutrition topics about which program
participants wanted to learn more. In August
2020, the ADA collected feedback from lifestyle
change program coaches on typical nutrition
questions they receive from program participants.
Based on this feedback, ADA's Health Care
Programs team recognized the need for nutrition
materials to be developed to support diabetes
prevention and management programs, as well
as health care providers serving people with
prediabetes and diabetes.
To meet this need, a series of six videos with
accompanying handouts was developed. These
materials are designed for use with low literacy
populations and the nutrition recommendations
they offer are relevant to people with prediabetes
or diabetes. All of the videos and handouts are
available in English and Spanish.
Included Topics
The materials focus on six popular nutrition topics:
* Food Groups and Portion Sizes. Understand
how the different food groups work together and
how much to eat to achieve health goals.
* Healthy Ways to Cook and Season Food. Learn
how cooking methods and seasonings can make
meals healthier and tastier.
* Navigating the Grocery Store. Take the
healthiest path around the grocery store and plan
ahead to reach health goals. Get tips on saving
money and making nutritious food choices.
* Food Label Know-How. Select the healthiest
food options by comparing food labels. Learn
what to look for first, how to interpret serving size
information, and other valuable skills.
* Plan Your Plate. Use the diabetes plate method
to eat better, incorporate more variety into meals,
and manage portion sizes.
* Sugar Substitutes. Learn what sugar substitutes
are, the different types of sweeteners available,
and how they can be incorporated into a
healthful meal plan.
The materials address topics relevant to a broad
range of audiences. These resources can be valuable
to diabetes care teams and can be used to support
the retention and engagement of participants in
diabetes self-management education and support
and National DPP programs.
Distribution and Next Steps
The ADA has made all of these new materials
available to its affiliate sites throughout the country
and is working on a larger-scale distribution plan.
The materials will be available free of charge to
anyone who requests them. The new videos are
available in the ADA's YouTube Channel and the
accompanying handouts are available in its Patient
Education Library.

Eye Health Risk Calculator Now Available
RetinaRisk, a diabetic retinopathy risk calculator,
is now available. Encourage your patients to use
this clinically validated calculator to assess their
risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, better
understand the factors affecting their risk, and
learn ways to prevent vision complications. The
RetinaRisk calculator furthers the goals of the
ADA's Focus on Diabetes eye health initiative by
increasing awareness and understanding of the
importance of annual comprehensive eye exams
for people with diabetes. Patients and health
care professionals can access the calculator on
the ADA's website.
