Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished
International Service in the Cause of
Diabetes
Juliana C.N. Chan,
MBChB, MD, FRCP
Dr. Chan is a professor of
medicine and therapeutics and the founding
director of the Hong
Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity
at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Recognized globally, Dr. Chan has impressively used research and professional
education to inform practice and policies
for the prevention and management of
diabetes. Over three decades, Dr. Chan
has established large patient cohorts, biobanks, and databases to define the causes
and consequences of diabetes in Asia. She
has systemically confirmed the benefits of
a team-based structured care approach in
reducing clinical events and mortality in
people with diabetes. She also developed
the innovative, 11-country JADE (Joint
Asia Diabetes Evaluation) program to
gather data and issue personalized reports
to empower individual patients and reduce
clinical inertia. With several productive
international research collaborations, Dr.
Chan has published more than 500 papers
and 20 book chapters, trained hundreds
of graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows, and established institutes, laboratories, and diabetes centers to generate
and translate evidence to practice through
public-private partnerships.

Kelly West Award for Outstanding
Achievement in Epidemiology
Elizabeth Mayer-Davis,
PhD, MSPH, RD
Dr. Mayer-Davis is
the Cary C. Boshamer
Distinguished Professor
of Nutrition and
Medicine and chair of the Department
of Nutrition at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. With research focused on the epidemiology of diabetes in
youth and young adults, work is described
in more than 300 peer-reviewed articles
and book chapters. Dr. Mayer-Davis has
conducted trials in type 2 diabetes prevention and type 1 diabetes treatment. She
has also performed observational studies
of diabetes complications and the role of
nutrition. Much of her work has focused
on translating research to better understand its clinical and public health implications. Dr. Mayer-Davis has been active
in the scientific advisory and diabetes
advocacy communities, including service
as the American Diabetes Association's
President, Health Care & Education from
2011 to 2013. Recently, she was appointed
to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory
Committee by the U.S. Departments
of Agriculture and Health and Human
Services. Previously, she was appointed
by President Barack Obama to serve on
the Advisory Group of Prevention, Health
Promotion, and Integrative and Public
Health from 2011 to 2017.

Diabetes

In 2013, the American Diabetes
Association (ADA) launched Pathway
to Stop Diabetes, its most innovative
research initiative yet. The Pathway
program has a simple, bold mission: to
bring 100 brilliant scientists to diabetes
research. The program identifies and selects individuals who possess capacity to
transform diabetes research from among
individuals who are nominated as the
single most promising scientist in their
institution. This year, the ADA welcomed
three new Pathway awardees to this prestigious group, bringing the total number
of funded scientists to 32.
The 2019 award recipients presented their
projects at the annual Pathway symposium, which was attended by the Pathway
Mentor Advisory Group, ADA leadership, and philanthropic and corporate
Pathway supporters. The three new award
recipients were:
* Ebony B. Carter, MD, of Washington
University in St. Louis, MO, who
received a Pathway Accelerator Award
for her clinical research project titled,
"Targeted Lifestyle Change Group
Prenatal Care for Obese Women at
High Risk for Gestational Diabetes: A
Randomized Controlled Trial"
* Sarah A. Tishkoff, PhD, of the
University of Pennsylvania in
Philadelphia, who received a Pathway
Visionary Award for her basic research
project titled, "Genetic Risk Factors
for Diabetes in Populations of African
Ancestry"
* Matthew J. Webber, PhD, of the
University of Notre Dame, in Notre
Dame, IN, who received a Pathway
Accelerator Award for his bioengineering project titled, "Hypoglycemic
Rescue with Glucose-Responsive
Glucagon Delivery Devices"
