New Compendium Available on Diabetes-Related Eye Disease
The burdens of diabetes and diabetes-related retinopathy (DR) are
staggering, with direct costs comprising $357 billion in the United
States alone. Worldwide, approximately 35% of people with diabetes develop some form of DR, and vision-threatening DR develops
in about 10% of people with diabetes. There is an urgent need to
prevent and minimize this chronic complication of diabetes.
For those who treat patients with diabetes, a thorough understanding of the vision-threatening aspects of DR is essential.
That's why the American Diabetes Association encouraged the
development of the Prevention and Management of DiabetesRelated Eye Disease compendium. It provides information
tailored for primary care providers (PCPs), focusing on the
importance of regular screening to identify at-risk patients, prevention strategies, and novel treatment approaches.

The topics were selected by Thomas W. Gardner, MD, MS, of
the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan Medical
School, and range from optimizing medical management for
diabetes patients to advice for empowering and motivating
patients by respectfully addressing their anxieties and treatments
options. The compendium, which is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Genentech, Inc., aids PCPs in their
efforts to prevent, diagnose, and manage diabetes-related eye
complications and thereby to improve the health and well-being
of their patients.
The Prevention and Management of Diabetes-Related Eye Disease
compendium is the third compendium published by ADA in the
past year. All three compendia can be found on DiabetesPro at
professional.diabetes.org/monographs.

Inaugural Interest Group Leadership Meeting Held
at the 79th Scientific Sessions

2019 Interest Group Award
Recipients

The American Diabetes Association's
(ADA's) Interest Group Leadership Teams
and Professional Engagement Department
recently held a 90-minute open forum
to discuss strategies for strengthening
the association's 15 Professional Interest
Groups. Over the past year, substantial
changes were made to the Interest Groups
in terms of their leadership structure,
activities, and engagement strategies, and
the meeting aimed to evaluate the impact
of these changes and develop strategies for
the groups' long-term sustainability.

Please join the American Diabetes
Association (ADA) in celebrating this
year's Professional Interest Group Award
recipients.

Several key themes were discussed
during the June 8 meeting: 1) Interest
Groups should expand and enhance their
activities outside of the ADA's annual
Scientific Sessions to strengthen yearround engagement; 2) Interest Groups
should establish mission statements to
guide their activities; 3) the DiabetesPro
Member Forum will be an integral component of engaging with and building
the Interest Groups; and 4) the Interest
Groups will have a more active role in
contributing ideas for ADA's annual
Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and
position statements.
The Interest Group Leadership Teams
are actively working to identify new opportunities for members to get involved
in various ADA initiatives. Examples
of engagement opportunities that were

discussed include member-led webinars,
networking events, member suggestions
regarding the Standards of Care (which
can be discussed in the DiabetesPro
Member Forum or submitted to ADA's
Professional Practice Committee directly
via the suggestion form available at
professional.diabetes.org/soc), online
journal clubs, and clinical case study
discussions.
The ADA is excited about the growth of
the 15 Interest Groups and looks forward
to ongoing and future collaborations with
members. All Interest Group members
are encouraged to share additional
engagement ideas via the DiabetesPro
Member Forum. Log in to the forum
today at professional.diabetes.org/forum.
