Association Hosts Sixth Annual Focus on Fellows Program
The sixth Focus on Fellows program for early-career endocrinologists took place
June 6-7 in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association's 79th Scientific
Sessions in San Francisco, CA. This year, 131 fellows participated in the program.
Focus on Fellows aims to encourage endocrinology fellows to remain in the field
of diabetes. The program provided exclusive opportunities, including expert-led
lectures and panel discussions, career-building activities, and other small-group
learning sessions.
"I have been involved since the first Focus on Fellows program (as a participant)
and then as a member of the Early Career Advisory Group and a moderator for the
last 3 years," commented Meltem Zeytinoglu, MD, MBA. "I have seen the value of
the program and the evolution into something fellows across the country actively
seek out and value very much."

Participants plan their Scientific Sessions schedule at this year's Focus on Fellows.

Providing networking opportunities between fellows and senior scientists/clinicians
is another focus of the program. Receptions and a fellows-only lounge helped to
create an environment for mentoring and sharing ideas.
Program participants provided overwhelmingly positive feedback. "Topics this year
were excellent and should be continued in some form next year. Also, the Fellows'
Lounge was an excellent opportunity to meet people and hear about interesting
sessions," one participant said. Another fellow commented, "I would like to thank
the committee for arranging this program. Focus on Fellows is very inspirational for
fellows and early-career members like me. All the sessions I joined were very useful,
practical, and nicely presented."
Focus on Fellows was developed under the guidance of the Early Career Advisory
Group, including, in addition to Dr. Zeytinoglu, Anila Bindal, MD, Robert H. Eckel,
MD, Robert Gabbay, MD, PhD, FACP, Michael Haller, MD, Ildiko Lingvay, MD,
MPH, MSCS, Kieren J. Mather, MD, Bhargavi Patham, MD, PhD, and Jane E.B.
Reusch, MD. This year's Focus on Fellows program was supported by the Leona M.
and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and Merck.
