Diabetes Pro Quarterly - Summer 2022 - 2

A Word from ADA's Chief Scientific & Medical Officer
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am full of energy, ideas, and enthusiasm after seeing so many of you at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA's) 82nd Scientific
Sessions! I count it a privilege to be surrounded by the world's leading scientists, clinicians, and early-career professionals. We have every
reason to be optimistic about the future of diabetes care and the state of diabetes research.
Many stunning scientific developments were announced at the meeting, including the results of the SURMOUNT-1 trial; progress in
addressing health disparities; new approaches to diabetes prevention, management, and care; breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes prevention
and treatment; and advances in complications prevention. If you missed the Scientific Sessions or attended but did not get to certain
presentations, you still have a chance to access this incredible content. Virtual access is available for 90 days after the meeting-through
September 5. Visit the DiabetesPro website and click on the Scientific Sessions tab to access all the content. Just enter your registration
confirmation number or register on the spot to receive access.
With almost 11,000 attendees, we were thrilled with the success of our first hybrid conference and are poised to exceed expectations
again next year, when we meet in San Diego June 23-27, 2023. I am busy working with the Planning Committee and the ADA team to
shape our next Scientific Sessions, and I want to welcome you to join the process. We want to try some new things! If you have ideas or
suggestions, please click on this survey to offer your input.
There has been much progress over the past few months at the ADA. I want to draw your attention to a few items that might hold promise
for you and your colleagues.
Health Equity Community-Based Interventions
The ADA is committed to health equity for all people with diabetes through our Health Equity Now platform. One way we are focusing
on achieving equity is by partnering with Bank of America, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society to deliver
community-based interventions in 11 cities across the United States over 4 years. The ADA is leading the initiatives in three cities-
Albuquerque, NM, Denver, CO, and Washington, DC-and supporting initiatives in the other eight selected cities. The initiative efforts will
fall into three categories: facilitating education and capacity building for health systems, partners, and patients; increasing access to health
screenings and preventive care; and advocating with state and local leaders for policies that ensure fair opportunities and resources.
Food Security and Diabetes Support
The ADA recently announced a 2-year Accelerating Health Equity Grant awarded by the Pfizer Foundation to support a community
garden and diabetes support program in Alabama and Florida. This important initiative is our lead story on the cover of this DiabetesPro
Quarterly issue.
A major focus of our professional education efforts emphasizes primary care. Our signature program, Diabetes Is Primary, has recently
relaunched with a series of new, innovative educational approaches and several additional programs targeting the use of technology in
practice. This online educational initiative offers information and strategies to improve patient outcomes in a self-paced format that easily
fits into the schedules of busy clinicians.
Living Standards of Care
The most recent Living Standards updates for the ADA's Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes-2022 were published in late May and
reflect new data from cardiovascular and renal trials. Updates to the Standards of Care are made in response to important advances in
diabetes care, whenever they occur. Suggestions for future updates can be made online and will be routed for review and assessment by our
outstanding Professional Practice Committee.
It is such a delight to serve as the ADA's Chief Scientific & Medical Officer. I loved visiting with so many of you in New Orleans and look
forward to seeing more of you throughout the year at various diabetes events. As always, we are grateful for your support. Please take care of
yourselves because people with diabetes need you!
Please connect with me on LinkedIn, Twitter (Dr Bob@DrBobGabbay), or Facebook (@drbobgabbay), and
follow the ADA on all social platforms so we can stay in touch and continue to build our great community.
Sincerely,
Robert Gabbay, MD, PhD,
ADA Chief Scientific & Medical Officer
