Group, a prenatal group program that meets for 2 hours
every other week to discuss healthy eating, parenting,
pregnancy, exercise, and behavioral health. The study,
which has faced enrollment setbacks because of the
coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, will measure
maternal outcomes, including the development of
gestational diabetes, lifestyle measurements, gestational
weight gain, and adverse pregnancy and neonatal
outcomes such as increased birth weight and adiposity.
Dr. Carter is looking forward to having evidence to back
up the anecdotal success of the program.
* Dr. Zhen Gu, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China-
Project Title: A Translational Pathway of Smart Insulin
Patch. Dr. Gu has developed a quarter-sized smart insulin
microneedle patch, which has been shown to regulate
blood glucose levels in 25-kg pigs with type 1 diabetes.
Currently, there is an efficacy and safety study underway.
Dr. Gu explained that the concept of a bioresponsive
microneedle patch could serve as a platform for multiple
analytes and suggested that the patch could be engineered
to administer both glucose and insulin in response to
glucose levels. He also noted that there could be many
other applications (e.g., use as an " anti-acne " patch).

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has selected 18 research award recipients in response to its two most recent targeted
requests for applications: Leveraging Nutrition and Lifestyle for Diabetes Prevention Across the Life Span and Leveraging Precision
Medicine to Improve the Lives of People with Diabetes. These awards include Junior Faculty Development, Innovative Clinical &
Translational Science, and Innovative Basic Science Awards with a start date of July 1, 2022, and terms of up to 3 years.
