Clinical Compendium: A Practical Guide to
Diabetes-Related Eye Care
This summer, the American
Diabetes Association (ADA)
published a comprehensive
guide to eye care as part
of Focus on Diabetes, the
multiyear initiative that
brings together the ADA
and partners from leading
organizations in vision care
to increase awareness about
diabetes and eye health. The
guide, authored by Thomas
W. Gardner, MD, MS, and
a team of experts, aims to
improve outcomes for people
with diabetes-related retinal disease. The authors identify
key data eye care professionals need to receive from health
care providers and vice versa to ensure the eye health of
their shared patients. They also provide helpful suggestions
for reducing patient apprehension by explaining what to
expect from retinal screenings and therapeutic procedures. In
addition, the authors emphasize the need to address social
determinants of health and ensure equity in the provision of
eye care services. Online access to this compendium is free,
supported by unrestricted educational grants from VSP Vision
Care and Regeneron. To access this and all ADA-published
compendia, visit the Clinical Compendia landing page.
Comprehensive Consensus Report Outlines
Heart Failure and Diabetes
The ADA and the American College of Cardiology (ACC)
recently convened a writing group to formulate expert
guidance for practitioners on the best approaches for
screening and diagnosing heart failure in individuals with
diabetes. Leveraging policy statements previously published
by the ACC and the American Heart Association, the report
outlines best practices for general internists, primary care
providers, and endocrinologists for heart failure screening,
diagnosis, and management in individuals with type 1
diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes. With the goals of
ensuring optimal access to evidence-based management
for all and mitigating the risks of serious complications,
this effort was undertaken in response to requests from
throughout the diabetes care provider community. The
resulting consensus report, endorsed by the ADA and ACC,
was published in the July issue of Diabetes Care at https://
diabetesjournals.org/care/issue/45/7.
