Help Your Patients Plan Portions Using the
Diabetes Plate Method
The Diabetes Plate Method is an easy way to build healthy,
balanced meals while managing portion sizes. No counting,
calculating, measuring, or tracking is necessary; all you need
is a 9-inch plate.
The American Diabetes Association is proud to launch two
new tools to help facilitate your patient nutrition counseling
sessions. The first is a diabetes placemat tear pad. These
easy-to-understand take-home handouts show common foods
consumed in the United States and help people with diabetes
plan meals and manage portions. The second is a plate method
portion wheel. This 9-inch laminated tool offers a simple visual to
help patients recognize appropriate portion sizes. The wheel is
divided into the three main food groups-nonstarchy vegetables,
carbohydrate foods, and protein foods-and provides colorful
representations of commonly consumed foods from each group.
Both resources are available in Spanish and English and can be
ordered from shopdiabetes.org.
