Diabetes Digital App Technology:
Benefits, Challenges, and
Recommendations
The European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the
American Diabetes Association jointly conducted a review
of diabetes digital health technology (including stand-alone
diabetes apps, as opposed to those that are integral to a regulated
medical device, such as insulin pumps, continuous glucose
monitoring systems, and automated insulin delivery systems)
and practices of regulatory authorities and organizations.
The findings are published in a consensus report outlining
recommendations for regulatory agencies, manufacturing
companies, international and national professional societies,
funding bodies, researchers, health care providers, and people
with diabetes to take into careful consideration. The report was
jointly published online in November 2019 by Diabetologia
(https://doi.org/10.1007/s00125-019-05034-1) and
Diabetes Care (https://doi.org/10.2337/dci19-0062).

Update: Management of Hyperglycemia
in Type 2 Diabetes
In July 2019, the American Diabetes Association
(ADA) and the European Association for the Study of
Diabetes began work on briefly updating the jointly
published 2018 recommendations on management
of hyperglycemia. Implications of new evidence from
large cardiovascular outcomes trials led the group
to include additional considerations, in the setting of
type 2 diabetes and established CVD, for treatment
with a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist or
sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor for the
management of hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes.
The resulting updated recommendations have been
included in the ADA's Standards of Medical Care in
Diabetes-2020. The consensus report was jointly
published online in December 2019 by Diabetologia
(https://doi.org/10.1007/s00125-019-05039-w) and
Diabetes Care (https://doi.org/10.2337/dci19-0066).

New App Supports Guidelines-Based Treatment
The Know Diabetes by Heartâ„¢ A1CVD Pro professional education app is a competency-based medical education program, tailored
to the needs of busy health care professionals. Aimed at clinicians who treat patients with type 2 diabetes, this free tool is designed
to improve clinical decision-making and understanding of current American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association
treatment guidelines for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Treatment standards are rapidly evolving, and staying up to date can be difficult. This app takes users through a simulation experience
through which they are presented with real-life case studies, given a series of treatment decisions, and guided through current practice
guidelines.
The new app is available for download from the App Store and Google Play. Learn more at https://knowdiabetesbyheart.org/
