Two Recipients Selected for ADA's
Cardiovascular-Metabolic Fellowship Awards,
Supported by a Grant from Pfizer, Inc.
The American Diabetes Association recently
announced two recipients of its CardiovascularMetabolic Fellowship Awards, supported by a
grant from Pfizer, Inc. These fellowships, which
commenced on January 1, 2021, provide support
of up to $135,000 for up to 2 years of funding for
studies focused on improving our understanding
of the pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention
of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with
diabetes. In addition to expanding our understanding
of CVD, these awards seek to increase the number
of future independent diabetes researchers exploring
treatments and potential cures for diabetes.
The recipients of the awards are:
* Layla Abushamat, MD, at the University of
Colorado in Denver, CO, for her clinical research
project titled, " Adiponectin and Cardiac Function
in Type 2 Diabetes: Impact of Exercise Training "

Video Series Available
Basal Insulin in People With Type 2
Diabetes: Mitigating Hypoglycemia in
High-Risk Patients
The editors of Clinical Diabetes, the American
Diabetes Association's journal for primary and
point-of-care providers, are excited to announce
the publication of a digital program dedicated to
the effective use of basal insulin to treat people
with type 2 diabetes. In this short video series,
an expert panel moderated by John Anderson,
MD, discusses approaches to optimizing basal
insulin initiation and treatment in people with
type 2 diabetes, including those patients most at
risk (e.g., those with renal impairment and older
adults), with a focus on reaching A1C goals while
mitigating the risk of hypoglycemia.

* Jacquelyn Walejko, PhD, at Duke University
in Durham, NC, for her basic research project
titled, " Reshaping Liver Branched-Chain AlphaKeto Acid Metabolism to Prevent Diabetic
Cardiomyopathy "

Many people with type 2 diabetes are treated
with insulin with the goal of achieving a
specific A1C target. The panel discusses
important considerations for the management
of hypoglycemia in these patients. When used
appropriately, basal insulin analogs can reduce
the risk of hypoglycemia while still achieving
individualized glycemic goals.
Dr. Anderson is joined by Paresh Dandona, MD,
PhD; Geralyn R. Spollett, MSN, ANP, CDE; and
Scott Urquhart, PA-C, MPAS. The videos and an
executive summary of the panel's recommendation
are available on the Clinical Diabetes website.
Financial support for this digital publication was
provided by Sanofi.
