Clinical News cont. from page 1 Advocacy Award: Being Responsible American Indians with Diabetes (BRAID) Oklahoma City, Okla. The BRAID Program educates American Indians about type 2 diabetes prevention and promotes healthier lives with positive lifestyle changes. Members of the BRAID team created a detailed brochure explaining their efforts in the diabetes community and the critical role played by SDPI funding. The brochure emphasizes the important work done on a daily basis by the dedicated staff, and features moving testimonials from patients about the difference that diabetes education has made in their lives. BRAID representatives shared this brochure with the Oklahoma congressional delegation. Cherokee Nation Diabetes Program Tahlequah, Okla. The Cherokee Nation Diabetes Program has provided services and diabetes supplies to over 10,000 diabetes patients seen by its outpatient clinics and hospitals. The clinical staff are fully integrated into the delivery of direct patient care at their facilities, all have additional diabetesrelated training, and many are certified diabetes educators. The Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program (CNDPP) offers 16-week diabetes prevention classes to participants with prediabetes, with classes covering nutrition, physical activity, and psychosocial concepts. The 16-week program is followed by ongoing activities, meetings, and assistance from a life coach to help participants achieve their Professional Section Quarterly weight-loss goals. Since February 2006, CNDPP has established 21 groups in six counties and has retained 187 of 247 participants. Participants completing the classes have lost a total of 2,752.5 pounds during the 16week session, with 92 participants reaching their 7 percent weight loss goal. ADA and AADE Issue Revised Diabetes Self-Management Standards he National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education, which are updated approximately every five years, have been reviewed and revised by a task force convened last fall by the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). The Healthy O’odham Promotion Program introduced the Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools (DETS) curriculum throughout four schools of the Tohono O’odham tribal reservation. The program team also implemented a teleschool pilot project in collaboration with four middle schools off the reservation. The curriculum focused on preventing diabetes and obesity.
