As the “Diabetes and Driving” position statement notes, private and non-interstate commercial driving are subject to individual states’ rules, which vary widely in how they deal with identifying, evaluating, and restricting drivers with diabetes. “This country needs a far more consistent, fair and equitable means of determining driving risk when it comes to people with diabetes,” said Professional Practice Committee member Daniel Lorber, MD, FACP, CDE, of New York Hospital Queens, who chaired the writing group that developed the position statement.
