ADA-Commissioned Study
Puts U.S. Cost of Diagnosed
Diabetes at $245 Billion
New research published in the
April 2013 issue of Diabetes
Care estimates that the total economic cost of diagnosed diabetes
in the United States rose to $245
billion in 2012 from $174 billion
in 2007, when the cost was last
examined. The new total represents a 41% increase over five
years (in 2007 dollars).
The study, “Economic Costs of
Diabetes in the U.S. in 2012,”
looked at the financial burden,
increased health-resource use,
and lost productivity associated
with diabetes in 2012. Direct
medical costs accounted for
$176 billion of the $245 billion
figure; lost productivity accounted for the remaining
$69 billion. Included in the
study are detailed cost breakdowns by age group, gender,
race/ethnicity, insurance coverage, medical condition, and
health-service category.
Major Findings
The largest components of the
$176 billion in medical expenditures are:
■ hospital inpatient care (43% of
the total medical cost);
■ prescription medications to
treat complications of diabetes
(18%);

Free ADA Resources for Helping
Patients With Their Diagnosis
By John E. Anderson, MD

W
e all know
that type 2
diabetes is on
the rise. As a primary care physician, I diagnose
many people
with diabetes—and breaking the
news is never easy. I see the
mixed emotions of anger, guilt,
shame, and fear. Even patients
who expected to get diabetes
someday are devastated when
they hear the diagnosis.
Whenever I tell a patient that
he or she has diabetes, I pull
out the American Diabetes
Association’s Where Do I Begin?
booklet. The booklet was developed to give newly diagnosed
patients a basic introduction to
diabetes and to help
quell their
fears. I’ve
been
using the
Where
Do I
Begin?
booklet in
my practice for
over a year now, and my patients
love it. They feel good about
leaving my office with information to get themselves started,
and I feel good knowing that this
information comes from the
American Diabetes Association.
Because it takes more than a
booklet to learn how to live
with diabetes, the Association
also offers patients the opportunity to enroll in the Living With
Type 2 Diabetes program, a
free, yearlong program that provides more information, recipes,
tools, and resources for finding
support. My patients say that the
program helps them feel like
they don’t have to tackle this
disease alone.
If you haven’t done so already,
order your free copies of Where
Do I Begin? to give to your newly
diagnosed patients. Then encourage them to enroll in the Living
With Type 2 Diabetes program.
Help them get all the information
they need to
live well with
type 2 diabetes.
