Major Lectures and Addresses Announced
We cordially invite you to attend presentations by the
Presidents of the American Diabetes Association:
This year’s Scientific
Sessions introduces
new program features
and advancements
that will make the
meeting one of the
most interesting and
interactive conferences
on diabetes to date.
More than 1,200
cutting-edge presentations by prestigious
diabetes experts will
explore the latest
research breakthroughs
in the meeting’s eight theme areas: Acute and Chronic
Complications; Behavioral Medicine, Clinical Nutrition,
Education, and Exercise; Clinical Diabetes/Therapeutics;
Epidemiology/Genetics; Immunology/Transplantation;
Insulin Action/Molecular Metabolism; Integrated
Physiology/Obesity; and Islet Biology/Insulin Secretion.
All sessions will take place at the McCormick Place
Convention Center. The official program will begin on
Friday, June 21, at 2:00 p.m., following Meet the
Expert Sessions, and conclude on Tuesday, June 25, at
12:15 p.m.
New This Year! Presidents’ Oral Sessions
Lurelean B. Gaines, RN, MSN, will give the President,
Health Care & Education Address, “Improving the Lives
of All People Affected by Type 2 Diabetes,” on
Saturday, June 22.
John E. Anderson, MD, will deliver the President,
Medicine & Science Address, “The Epidemic—Are WE
Ready to Meet the Challenge?,” on Sunday, June 23.
The recipients of the Association’s highest scientific
achievement awards will present lectures at this year’s
meeting:
Graeme I. Bell, PhD, will present the Banting Lecture,
“Genetics of Diabetes—A Personal Journey of
Discovery,” on Sunday, June 23.
Jens C. Brüning, MD, will deliver the Outstanding
Scientific Achievement Award Lecture, “Insulin Action—
Beyond Its Classic Targets,” on Monday, June 24.
Supported by an educational grant from Lilly USA, LLC
Ann L. Albright, PhD, RD, will give the Outstanding
Educator in Diabetes Award Lecture, “Diabetes
Prevention and Management—The Thrill Is NOT Gone,”
on Saturday, June 22.
Supported by an educational grant from Lilly USA, LLC
Edward J. Boyko, MD, MPH, will present the Kelly West
Award Lecture, “Central Obesity—Cause or Correlate in
Type 2 Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome?,” on
Sunday, June 23.

Other key lectures and addresses:
This year’s program will showcase breakthrough science
in two newly created Presidents’ Oral Sessions. The
selected abstracts will feature innovative research in
basic and clinical science. Scheduled for Friday afternoon and Tuesday morning, these oral sessions will
replace the Late-Breaking Abstracts symposium. A list of
the abstracts and session times will be available in the
Final Program.
Caroline A. Crowther, MD, FRANZCOG, FRCOG, CMFM,
will deliver the Norbert Freinkel Award Lecture,
“Generating, Synthesizing, and Using the Best
Evidence for Care of Women with Gestational
Diabetes,” on Saturday, June 22.
Meet the Expert Sessions
Christopher E. Attinger, MD, FACS, will present the Roger
Pecoraro Award Lecture, “The Three Keys to the Kingdom
of Diabetic Limb Salvage,” on Saturday, June 22.
Each Meet the Expert Session is designed to enable
attendees to meet and interact with key opinion leaders,
who will facilitate informal discussions on clinical and
basic science topics. These sessions will be held on
Friday, June 21, at noon and 12:50 p.m. There is no
required sign-up for the sessions; however, space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rubin Award Lecture, “The ‘White Cap’ Advantage—
Contributions of Nurses to Behavioral Research in
Diabetes,” on Saturday, June 22.

Joseph L. Witztum, MD, will present the Edwin Bierman
Award Lecture, “Immune Mechanisms in Atherogenesis—
