AIPRO To Convene In Early October
LITTLE ROCK, AR.-The market forecast and regulatory issues are among a
long list of topics on the agenda for the
Arkansas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association's annual convention, reports AIPRO Executive Vice
President J. Kelly Robbins.
The conference is scheduled for Oct.
6-7 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Little
Rock, where attendees will discover the
latest information pertaining to producers
and royalty owners throughout the state's
oil and gas industry.
"Our focus will be on many topics,
including the market forecast for oil and
gas, and regulations concerning air, water
and other matters of importance and concern," Robbins says. "We also will tackle
issues concerning geopolitical market
pressures, safety, federal taxes, and export
restrictions on crude oil and liquefied
natural gas.
Such topics are important to AIPRO
members because the industry in which
they work constantly confronts a host of
issues, he continues. "In organizing our
agenda, we try to provide a variety of
topics so that, regardless of attendees'
geographic or geologic locations, they
will learn about a multitude of issues that
are pertinent to them," Robbins relates.
Global View
According to Robbins, Kyle Isakower,
vice president of regulatory and economic
policy at the American Petroleum Institute,
will offer a keynote speech that addresses
the geopolitical issues affecting energy
markets. "In the current market, with its
numerous moving pieces around the globe
that affect prices, it is crucial for us to
learn more about this geopolitical puzzle,"
Robbins states. "Isakower will address
how this will affect pricing in the coming
year to help prepare attendees to make
important business decisions."
Robbins indicates the convention begins at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a
general session featuring Tommy Foltz,
executive vice president of the Consumer
Energy Alliance, who will discuss the
politics of energy and opponents of oil
and gas production. Later, attendees will
hear updates from Becky Keogh, director
of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, and Larry Bengal, director
of the Arkansas Oil & Gas Commission.
The afternoon also will include a look
at threats to the oil and gas industry with
remarks from Laura Garrett, special agent
at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Robbins says the group also will hear
from Arkansas Attorney General Leslie
Rutledge, whom AIPRO has invited to
explain her plan to fight metal theft.
A reception is set for 6 p.m., followed
by the keynote banquet, with remarks
from API's Isakower.
According to Robbins, proceedings
on Wednesday, Oct. 7, begin at 8 a.m.
when AIPRO hopes to hear from Jim
Wimberly, senior vice president of engineering and economics at Energy Security
Partners, who has been invited to share
his presentation, "From Gas to Liquids."
A safety panel will follow, featuring
insights from Trena Adair, principal owner
of Harbor Environmental & Safety; Ronald
Goodman, environment, health, safety &
operations training manager at XTO Energy; and Clay Murphy, a partner with
Insurance Center Inc. Next will be the
producers' panel, featuring Steve Mueller,
chairman of the board and chief executive
officer of Southwestern Energy Co.; Rob
Reynolds, president of Shuler Drilling;
and Howard Vernon with Foundation
Energy Management.
Robbins indicates the morning will
close with remarks from Pete Regan, executive director of the Domestic Energy
Producers Alliance, who will discuss producers' federal tax issues and export restrictions.
The business meeting features Paige
Miller, an independent consultant who
will address Arkansas Energy Rocks!
and its teacher energy education workshops. A motivational speaker is on tap
for the luncheon that follows, after which
the meeting will adjourn.
Networking and leisure activities include a sporting clays shoot and golf
outing.
"Our association's annual meeting offers the ideal format for members to
share experiences, ideas and challenges
with friends, colleagues, policymakers
and other leaders from across the state
and the nation," Robbins summarizes.

USGS Study Finds Water Use
Varies Greatly Across Plays
WASHINGTON-While the amount
of water required to hydraulically fracture
oil and natural gas wells has increased
significantly since the emergence of the
U.S. shale plays, the U.S. Geological
Survey notes that amount varies widely.
USGS says the study, which was published in Water Resources Research, is
the first national-scale analysis and map
of hydraulic fracturing water usage. The
USGS finds that the amount of water
used in hydraulic fracturing ranges from
as little as 2,600 gallons to as much as
9.7 million gallons a well.
The survey says that, between 2000
to 2014, median annual water volume
estimates for fracturing horizontal wells
160 THE AMERICAN OIL & GAS REPORTER
increased from about 177,000 gallons a
well to more than 4.0 million gallons for
oil wells and 5.1 million gallons for gas
wells. Meanwhile, USGS notes, median
water use in vertical and directional wells
remained below 671,000 gallons.
"One of the most important things we
found was that the amount of water used
for each well varies quite a bit, even
within a single oil and gas basin," states
Tanya Gallegos, the study's lead author.
"This is important for land and resource
managers because a better understanding
of the water volumes injected for hydraulic
fracturing could be a key to understanding
the potential for some environmental impacts."
