on the surface production facility.
Finally, to be deployed effectively for
field application, an automated surface
unloading module needs to be developed
and tested. This module will be comprised
of liquid and gas meters, automated valves
and proprietary software to unload a well
without intervention by field operations.
The module will incorporate unloading
strategies to minimize unloading times
and automatically control the liquid and
gas rates using meters for wellhead flowing
pressure/temperature and injection pressure/temperature.
Whether for vertical wells in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico or pad-based horizontal wells in West Texas, gas lift holds
distinct advantages as an artificial lift solution. While cost and reliability issues
associated with conventional gas lift designs
continue to be concerns for operators, they
also represent opportunities for improvement and new technology development.
The LAGL method provides a path forward
to both reduce costs and improve well integrity and overall system reliability. r

STUART L. SCOTT is director of
technology at Petroleum Emerging Technology Corporation (PetroleumETC).
From 2008-16, he managed Shell's deepwater artificial lift technology program
and served for several years as Shell's
global artificial lift/pumping principal
technical expert. Before joining Shell,
Scott was petroleum engineering professor
at Texas A&M University and Louisiana
State University, and worked for Phillips
Petroleum Company in a variety of roles.
He is a Society of Petroleum Engineers
distinguished member and an American
Society of Mechanical Engineers fellow.
Scott holds a B.S. in petroleum engineering, an M.S. in computer science,
and a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering
from The University of Tulsa.

RENATO P. COUTINHO is a research
assistant and Ph.D. candidate in the
petroleum engineering department at
Louisiana State University. He previously
worked as an assistant professor at the

Center of Technological Education in
Brazil. His research interests include
multiphase flow in pipes, flow assurance,
gas lift technologies, artificial lift systems
and production optimization. Coutinho
holds a B.S. in chemical engineering
and an B.S. in transportation engineering
with a minor in petroleum engineering
from the Federal University of Ceara.

PAULO J. WALTRICH is an assistant
professor in Louisiana State University's
Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering. He previously worked
at Whirlpool Corp. and Petrobras America Inc. His research interests include
multiphase flow in pipes, artificial lift
systems, liquid loading in gas wells,
worst-case-discharge calculations, flow
assurance, and managed pressure
drilling. Waltrich holds a B.S. and an
M.S. in mechanical engineering from
the Federal University of Santa Catarina,
and a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering
from Texas A&M University.
