Multiphase Pump Empowers Independent Producer
To Revive Old Wells Constrained By Back Pressure
ALLENDALE, N.J.-When reservoir
pressures in an old northern Alabama
field fell too low for its wells to overcome
back pressures generated by flowlines
and the processing facility's first-stage
separator, Crosby's Creek Oil & Gas
LLC turned to multiphase pumping, relates
Leistritz Advanced Technologies Corp.
Before deploying a multiphase pump
in the Choctaw County field, Crosby's
Creek evaluated conventional alternatives
designed to reduce back pressures, including increasing flowline sizes or replacing the first-stage separator with a
much larger low-pressure unit. The company determined these solutions would

be uneconomic, given permitting requirements and equipment costs.
Crosby's Creek partnered with Leistritz
to develop a multiphase wellhead pumping
system to draw down wellhead back pressure
to 200 psi, Leistritz recounts. The company
says the pump's pressure boosting, with
reserve boosting capacity, had to be at least
500 psi to overcome flowline pressures.
Leistritz points out the system had to be
capable of remote unmanned operation,
and excepting the power supply, completely
self-supporting. The pump needed to handle
liquid rates ranging from 300 to 1,000
barrels a day, and daily gas rates that varied
from 500,000 cubic feet to 1 million cubic

feet. The combined flow rate at pump inlet
conditions would range from 6,000 to
14,000 barrels a day equivalent, corresponding to a gas void fraction of 95 percent,
Leistritz reports. The pump also needed to
endure slugging.
Leistritz recommended its Model L300
multiphase wellhead system, which is
based on a twin-screw pump.
To seal and protect the pump, and remove compression-generated heat,
Leistritz designed a recirculation system
that gathers liquids in a knock-out boot
or separator downstream of the pump
and circulates them into the pump suction.
This system provides the liquids necessary
to maintain compression even during
long gas slugs, Leistritz says. Other design
features include a variable frequency
drive and a double mechanical seal system,
the company adds.
Installation and commissioning took
place during the second quarter of 2016.
Leistritz reports the unit has performed
as expected, and has significantly increased
Crosby's Creek production.
The multiphase pump with VFD speed
control has shown it can adapt quickly to
field conditions and optimize production
with lower flowing wellhead pressure,
Leistritz continues. Because the pressure
boost from the twin-screw multiphase
pump is independent of inlet pressure,
the company says it gives the operator
the best possible tool to produce low-energy reservoirs.
