"It was realized rather quickly that
contractor training definitely was the
low-hanging fruit in improving workforce
efficiency and safety," she said. "From
there, the group started discussing what
should be included in a very robust orientation program. The committee came
up with 50 very important safety topics,
which included many North Dakotaspecific job hazards, including extremely
cold weather and winter driving hazards."
The program launched June 20 with
11 participating companies, Cutting said,
and as of mid-September, she indicated
more than 3,200 workers had completed
the training and received the ONE BASINOne Way certificates, which are transferrable from job to job.
Learning Leadership
NDPC started planning to offer leadership education to its members in 2018,
reported Pat Lipovski, chief executive
officer of Envision, and Scott Donald, a
senior partner, in their presentation on the
association's Emerging Leaders Program.

said. "The first day is all about leaders
understanding themselves better, so they

can better understand the people they are
leading, and whether they are internal
team members or stakeholders. Day two
is creating some of the tools and starting
to take up some of the tools of management
and leadership. There is a difference between those two."
According to Donald, the leadership
program was especially relevant to the
oil and gas industry because of the sector's
dynamism. Often, he related, a worker
doing an outstanding job at one level

would be promoted to leadership and
suddenly be responsible for a team of
people, but would not necessarily have
the needed tools or skills.
"The emerging leader program starts
with the skills of management that are
foundational. The strategic leader program
gives strategic planning skills because
we all learn how to do strategic planning
in building the systems used to run our
businesses. We finish with engagement
skills," Lipovski said.
