Shapes Virtual Format
To Offer Insights, Networking

DENVER-The Colorado Oil & Gas
Association began planning for its signature event-the 32nd Annual Energy
Summit, originally scheduled to be held
Aug. 17-19 at the Sheraton Downtown
Hotel in Denver-more than a year ago.
Little did anyone know 2020 would bring
a level of global disruption and crisis
few of us have seen in our lifetimes.
The Energy Summit was scheduled
for mid-August, so initially, the planning
team determined we should continue
planning the event as always, confirming
session topics and speakers, and implementing our marketing plan. August was
still many months away, and at the time
of the closures, many of us thought they
would only last a few weeks.
But as stay-at-home orders endured,

and became more restrictive, throughout
the country, the Energy Summit's fate
became less certain. "We already had
invested so much in the planning process,
developing a fantastic lineup of topics
and speakers-one of our best programs
yet-but we could not ignore what was
going on in the world, and what was
going on in the industry," says Dan
Haley, COGA's president and chief executive officer.
In addition to universal concerns about
COVID-19, our industry faced an unprecedented crude oil market decline. "It
became clear our Energy Summit would
need to adjust this year, not just in response
to public health concerns, but also to the
emerging financial concerns directly within
the oil and gas industry," Haley reflects.
Providing the Energy Summit as a
professional development and capacity-

building opportunity for our members is
core to COGA's mission. Especially this
year, when we are working through several
regulatory rule makings, our industry
needs these touchpoints to understand
what is happening, gain context and galvanize as a united community.
The Path Forward
The theme for the 2020 Energy Summit
had been selected earlier in the year-The
Path Forward: Solutions for Our Future.
Fortunately for COGA, the path forward
for the event was becoming clearer. After
surveying prospective attendees, the planning team discovered members would be
willing to consider a virtual conference
under the right conditions.
Convenience and cost were critical
variables in considering a virtual conference. Prospective attendees told us
