Smith Bits Debuts Cutters That Boost ROP, Durability
HOUSTON-Smith Bits, a Schlumberger
company, says its StrataBlade concave diamond element bits improve the rate of
penetration in a variety of rock types, while
withstanding impact damage often associated with drilling interbedded formations.
" The StrataBlade bit is the latest addition to our three-dimensional cutting
element portfolio, which expands our holistic drilling solutions offering and enables
operators to enhance overall drilling performance in challenging formations, " says

The bit incorporates new geometry
Strata concave diamond elements across
the bit face to increase cutting efficiency
and deliver higher instantaneous ROP
with the same operating parameters,
Schlumberger says. In deep lateral wells
where weight transfer to the bit is a challenge, StrataBlade drills with higher ROP
than traditional PDC bits with flat cutters,
the company reports, adding that the improved cutting efficiency also means a
better torque response at the bit for conformance to directional plans.

The new Q330 medium pressure models offer flow rates as fast as 153 gallons
per minute (5,247 barrels per day) and a
maximum pressure rating of 3,500 psi
(241 bar). New high pressure models
offer flow rates as fast as 118 gpm (4,047
bbl/d) and a maximum pressure rating of

Nine Opens Cementing Site To Serve Haynesville Shale
HOUSTON-Nine Energy Service Inc.
announces it has opened a 348,000
square foot cementing facility in
Longview, Tx., to expand its cementing
service line in the Haynesville Shale.
The facility features a state-of-the-art
laboratory for creating and testing a
range of cement slurries, as well as a
bulk plant to house additives and other
raw materials for storage and distribution, Nine describes. The company says
the facility demonstrates its ability to
capitalize on opportunities that better position it operationally, as well as its confidence in the Haynesville's near- and
long-term profitability.

Longview facility will be able to utilize
its expertise in high-pressure, high-tem-

perature environments to help customers
overcome production-threatening challenges and drive efficiencies, " says Joe
