ABB Offers UAV Payload For Detecting Gas Leaks
QUEBEC-ABB says its HoverGuard™ unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)based system quickly and reliably detects,
quantifies and maps pipeline leaks.
The system spots leaks up to 300
feet from natural gas distribution,
transmission and gathering lines, as
well as storage facilities and other
potential sources, ABB details. The
company says the detector automatically generates comprehensive digital
reports that can be shared minutes
after a survey.
Through patented cavity-enhanced
laser absorption spectroscopy, HoverGuard detects methane with a sensitivity
1,000 times higher than conventional

leak detection tools, ABB calculates.
This sensitivity allows HoverGuard to
detect leaks while flying at altitudes of
130 feet or higher, and at speeds greater
than 55 mph, ABB reports.
" Our groundbreaking solution effectively probes otherwise inaccessible locations to increase safety across the
pipeline network, " adds Doug Baer,

laser analyzers. " It detects and maps
natural gas leaks around hard-to-reach
sites such as bridges, areas with rightof-way restrictions or vegetation coverage

flies. The system operates on lowcost commercial UAVs capable

BlackBird Commercializes
Downhole Steam Creator
SONORA, TX.-Following two pilot
programs in Texas, BlackBird Energy
LLC reports it has commercialized the
BlackBird™ downhole steam tool,
which it presents as an environmentally-friendly way to access previously
unrecoverable oil.
The tool applies aerospace engineering
and rocket propulsion techniques to a
downhole repressurization process that
simultaneously injects steam, carbon dioxide and nitrogen into an oil well at high
velocity, temperature and pressure, BlackBird describes. The company says this
patented process significantly reduces
lifting costs by lowering oil's viscosity.
Putting high-quality steam and CO2
energy right at the sand face is more efficient than generating steam at the surface because it nearly eliminates thermal
line losses, BlackBird reports. The company adds that the subsurface system
reduces water usage and environmental
risks, can be moved from well to well
within two days and enables output to
be dynamically adjusted based on reservoir conditions rather than set when facilities are built.
The downhole enhanced oil recovery
tool can access pay at depths as great as
5,000 feet, BlackBird says. To reduce
emissions, the CO2 and other byproducts
can be sequestered or collected and even
sold, the company reports.
