Conference Season
A Good Way To
Hide From The Heat
August marks a time of year we in Texas lovingly call
" melt, " a time in which it gets so hot that no one wants to go
outside. Really, who with a choice in the matter has been
outside much lately? I recently shared a screenshot from my
weather app that showed Houston with a 122-degree real-feel
temperature, and of course, we all are hearing stories of
record-breaking heat across the country. I cannot imagine it
getting much hotter than it already has been this summer, but
we shall see.
As we all lock ourselves inside for one more month, dreaming
of cooler seasons and even snow, we also enter what I call conference
season. Yes, it's that time of year again when-after a
busy summer of vacations, summer camps and visits with loved
ones-it's time to get active again and reset with colleagues and
clients. And what better way to accomplish this than to kick off
the next couple of months with conference travel and training?
Although I always have a few can't-miss events, this year I
am looking at a few more possibilities that I think will be a
great addition to my rapidly filling travel schedule.
First on my list is the Texas Independent Producers &
Royalty Owners Association summer conference in San Antonio
in early August. This event typically draws great people,
ranging from energy professionals to subject matter experts
and state leaders. As next year's election approaches, the
names on the schedule included Texas Governor Greg Abbott,
Senator Ted Cruz, R-Tx., and Texas Railroad Commissioner
Wayne Christian.
Next up is an annual tradition of mine. In my opinion, one of
the best in the lower 48 this time of year is the Kansas
Independent Oil & Gas Association annual convention in
Wichita, Ks. Led by Ed Cross, KIOGA is one of the most
respected independent operator advocacy organizations around.
Each year, its annual meeting brings in hundreds of operators,
industry leaders and policymakers, all in support of the regional
industry that has led many of the oil field's historical innovations
over the years.
That same week, the Colorado Oil & Gas Association hosts
its showcase event, The Energy Summit. This event makes my
list because of the rapidly-changing industry landscape in
Colorado and the surrounding region. Key topics for the Energy
Summit include a look at the state of Colorado's energy industry,
a look at Colorado's ability to produce some of the planet's
cleanest energy molecules, and a panel discussion about
alternative energy development in the area, including geothermal,
carbon capture utilization and storage. This one surely will be
an exciting event in one of the country's emerging oily centers.
Back in Houston, the end of August will see the annual International
Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy (IMAGE),
held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This partnership
between the American Association of Petroleum Geologists
and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists is the year's key
geoscience event, bringing together content from the best of
both organizations in areas including near-surface engineering,

In September, the 24th World Petroleum Congress will come
to Calgary. I am excited about this one, considering it typically
moves around the globe and rarely is held so close to the United
States. Organizers of this event are addressing the energy
industry on a global scale with an eye toward carbon neutrality.
More than that, hundreds of exhibitors and innovators will
showcase their technologies and best practices. If you can make
it, it is worth checking out.
I am biased, but my next event will be the Eastern Kansas
Oil & Gas Association Annual Meeting, set to be held at a few
locations in Pittsburg, Ks. Kansas is a robust, oil-friendly state,
and EKOGA concentrates on issues important to companies
that operate in the state's eastern portion; however, many
members participate in both KIOGA and EKOGA. Do not let
the small-town appearance fool you; this event is among the
best in the region.
This is only a fraction of the events you can attend during
August and September, but for my money, these are the ones I
will be checking out. For complete information on these events
and many others, check the AOGR calendar for the latest. It
typically occupies two full pages at the front of each monthly
issue, and is also updated weekly at www.aogr.com.
