In our previous CFItoCFI newsletter article "Whiz Wheel Your Time's Up," we asked our readers'
opinion: Keep the old whiz wheel, or time for it to go? We received some great responses; enjoy!
E6B NO MO
Most industries left the slide rule behind many decades ago. Clinging to
old technologies out of tradition is contributing to the demise of aviation
interest in the young.
Aviation traditionally is associated with the cutting edge of technology.
The young are drawn to computers and the interface between technology
and aviation. I believe confronting a new flight student with a slide rule and
paper chart kills a lot of the interest.
Furthermore, young folks today have never known life without a smart
phone in their hand. They navigate via Siri and have no frame of reference
regarding paper maps or charts. It is unfair to try and require them to adapt
to an ancient technology that they're ill prepared to handle or understand,
especially since they know that there's a better way.
We need to prepare young pilots for their future and not obligate them to
re-create our past. It is time to leave the E6B behind.

I can see some value in the history as some have pointed out, but the
practical reality makes me come down on Ed Helmick's point of view. A
good, basic understanding of wind correction angles and flight planning-
beyond just climbing in the cockpit and entering the destination call sign
and hitting the Direct To button-is more important than knowing how to
use a manual calculator.
