CHIEF'S CORNER
I had been an instructor for several years
and was teaching a ground school class, not
an unknown scenario for me at all. But I was
having problems getting a concept across to
the class. I don't recall exactly what it was,
but it was something that I could see and
understand very clearly, and my class couldn't.
I was discussing this situation with my friend
when he asked me what would happen if I were
to throw a hat against a wall, would it stay up
there? No, it wouldn't. But what if I had a hook
on the wall that would catch that hat and keep
it up there? If I threw it just right, it would
probably stay.
He told me the hook was what my students
already knew, and the hat represented the new
knowledge I was trying to impart. Without the
hook, it would just slide down the wall of their

brain and not add to their knowledge base. But
if I figured out what the hook was by learning
what they already knew, drawing a similarity to
that, and then gently tossing the hat, chances
were very good that hat would stick on the
hook and we could discover another hook, toss
another hat, and so on. Pretty wise words from
him and what's better, it worked and now I
always try to find that shared knowledge that
my students and I can build on.
When I first became a flight instructor, we
didn't have many instructors at the FBO where
I worked; in fact, I was the only full-time
instructor. The CFI who trained me was moving
up to be the chief pilot in the charter operation
and then left the company shortly after that. For
some time, I was on my own to figure out how
to best teach the students I inherited and the

new ones who came walking through the door
to begin their journey to become a private pilot
and beyond. Fortunately for me one of my wife's
patients was a flight instructor who had taught
for a long time in central Maryland but lived in
West Virginia. They got to talking as he sat in
her dental chair and he mentioned that if I ever
needed to bounce a question off him, he was
willing to help. It took me a while to ask that
first question but soon he was my go-to guy and
he became a part-time instructor at my FBO.
One of the best things that happened was that
when I would have students that just weren't
understanding what I was trying to teach
them-and I'd exhausted every way possible to
present the material or maneuver-he would
take them for a flight, have them demonstrate
the maneuver and then offer some suggestions
on how to perform the maneuver better.
