IT'S THE TEACHER, NOT THE TOOL
In response to the responses concerning whether or not to
teach the old E6B, all of the responses in favor of old tech suggest
the reason to keep it is to teach students to estimate, get big-picture
situational awareness, and use common sense. As a longtime CFI
who has taught both old and new tech, I promise that it's possible to
teach the old-fashioned version of "button pushing" on the E6B! So
long as a student is only following steps they were taught, and not
understanding why, they can be just as clueless about the big picture
using an E6B as they can following a magenta line. I was that kid,
and I've seen it in students. To make matters worse, the E6B is more
mentally taxing, which can be a distraction and lead to premature
mental exhaustion rather than being a help.
I think the whiz wheel was ingenious, and I taught it as such. However,
for the students who struggled to grasp the big picture through the
haze of numbers, I didn't mind letting them lean on new tech so long as
they could demonstrate situational awareness and good judgment.
