AIRLINES: PILOT HIRING OVER THE NEXT DECADE
U.S. airlines have a retirement problem. When the airline industry struggled after the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and during the recession, pilot jobs were scarce.
American Airlines went 13 years without hiring a single one, a stretch that David Tatum,
the airline's director of pilot recruiting and development, calls "the lost decade."

The general aviation fatal accident rate for 2016 continued the previous year's decline even as
total hours flown marked three years of steady growth, according to the latest Joseph T. Nall
Report released on October 11 by the AOPA Air Safety Institute.
CALL FOR INCREASED ADS-B COVERAGE IN ALASKA
Concerned about gaps in ADS-B coverage in Alaska, four aviation groups jointly urged the
FAA to establish a minimum operational network for ADS-B in Alaska. In a joint letter,
NBAA, AOPA, the Alaska Airmen Association, and Alaskan Aviation Safety Foundation
acknowledged that a few areas of Alaska were used for operational demonstrations as part
of the Capstone Program.

A New England flight training business known for nurturing students in a professional
environment and a Tar Heel flight instructor who was recognized for his patience and motivation
were honored as the top winners of AOPA's 2019 Flight Training Experience Awards.
AOPA TO SERVE ON EXAMINER SYSTEM REVIEW PANEL
AOPA has been named a member of an FAA working group that will study ways to fix
shortcomings of the designated pilot examiner (DPE) system that created bottlenecks in
airman testing and exacerbated the industrywide pilot shortage.
NASA'S 1ST ALL-FEMALE SPACEWALK MAKES HISTORY
The world's first female spacewalking team has made history high above Earth. NASA
astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir exited the International Space Station
recently, marking the first time in a half-century of spacewalking that a woman floated out
without a male crewmate.
