question or the answer I was given was always,
"I don't have enough information to answer the
question," even if I told him that was all he was
going to get. He pushed me to be precise with my
terminology, succinct in my descriptions and
even coached me on when to shut up. Little by
little my own patter began to develop, and I took
that with me to the CFI checkrides. My FAA
examiner did exactly what I told/taught him
to do and when I realized that I had forgotten
to tell him to neutralize the ailerons in a turn, I
corrected that error and began to settle down to
demonstrate that I indeed had the knowledge
and ability to be a competent instructor.
Of course, as with any new certificate, the CFI
certificate was a license to learn as well as
to teach and the patter that I worked hard to
create became more refined in the crucible of
actually training students. No longer was it my
CFI with thousands of hours trying to act the
dumb student, it was a real live student making
the mistakes that I allowed because I wasn't

adequately explaining or demonstrating the
maneuver. As time went on my patter became
better and I found I wasn't talking as much
and I could get my point across succinctly. My
students learned to fly, soloed, went on crosscountry flights and successfully passed their
checkrides. Then I transitioned to another job
and didn't flight instruct as much and eventually
stopped altogether for a period. Getting back into
training after eight years meant bringing back
the old patter, but what had changed since then?
The elementary maneuvers were still the same;
could I bring back the refined patter I had at the
height of my time as a CFI or would I stumble
over descriptions, second-guess myself or maybe
even say the wrong thing?

HAVING A HOOK TO HANG THEIR HAT ON AS A FORMER COLLEAGUE USED TO SAY IS ALWAYS GOOD.
TAKING THEM FROM THE KNOWN TO THE UNKNOWN HELPS OUR STUDENTS LEARN BETTER. A PATTER
CAN DO THAT BUT PAY ATTENTION TO ENSURE THEY UNDERSTAND AND BE READY TO TRY A DIFFERENT
TAKE ON IT IF NEEDED.
