WHEN WILL I FLY AGAIN?
Taking a Focused
Flight Review

I'M SITTING ON MY PORCH WATCHING
AIRPLANES ON THE APPROACH TO
RUNWAY 23 AT FREDERICK MUNICIPAL
AIRPORT IN MARYLAND. THE PATH
IS RIGHT OVER MY HOUSE. This
summer's evening orange sunset to the
west and warm winds coming from the
south bring back memories of flying
the peaceful, steadfast approach to our
airport in the past. As the next airplane
passes right over me it transmits a
warm, humming engine sound slightly
cloaked by the sweltering summer
evening. I'm so excited to hear it, I jump
up to look and see if I can identify the
airplane make-it appears to be a Piper
Cherokee. That's it...I want to fly, too!
But I am completely rusty, completely
out of currency, and completely not
proficient. So, when will I fly again?
While I'm working on figuring out the
complexity of dealing with the COVID
pandemic and my reluctance to sit in
a small cockpit with a CFI during this
time when the virus is still rampant,
I'm thinking through the steps to get
current and proficient again, and the
path I want to take that will make me
feel comfortable to safely take up my
family and friends. I also want to be
confident that my go/no-go decision
making will not allow personal
pressures to interfere-that I will make
safe decisions every time I fly.
My first step to bring me closer to my
goal has been to download the most
recent copy of the FAR/AIM. My
next step will be to check out ASI's
Focused Flight Review program
(focusedflightreview.org)-all
this before I set foot in the airplane.
I can use this down time during the
pandemic to catch up on my knowledge
by reviewing quizzes, videos,
publications, and courses. As I work
for the AOPA Air Safety Institute, I'm
pretty familiar with those products!
But, does that mean I am up to snuff
on everything? Of course not. I need a
deeper understanding of the material
