PROPOSED IMMIGRATION RULE COULD IMPACT FLIGHT TRAINING
A federal rulemaking proposal could disrupt the flight training of some foreign
students by imposing a deadline on visas that currently allow them to remain in the
United States until their training and study are complete.

NEW 'NALL REPORTS' INDICATE CONTINUED DECREASE IN ACCIDENT RATE
The AOPA Air Safety Institute's just-released editions of the Joseph T. Nall Report
note a continued decrease in overall accident rates. The overall accident rate in
2017 was 4.81 per 100,000 flight hours and 4.56 in 2018. The fatal accident rate also
decreased to 0.76 per 100,000 hours in 2017 and 0.74 in 2018, based on available data.

NTSB SAFETY ALERT CAUTIONS ON DANGERS OF FLIGHT IN SNOW
The NTSB issued a Safety Alert last week highlighting the dangers of flight into snow,
citing concern that some pilots don't understand the full dangers involved in such
operations. " A recent NTSB investigation revealed that pilots and operators assumed
that flight in snow was safe as long as minimum ceiling and visibility requirements
were met or that snow conditions were too dry or cold to pose an icing hazard, " the
Safety Board said. " Pilots also commented that snow conditions are safe to fly in as long
as you can see through it; they did not consider the effects of icing. " Learn more.

BASICMED AND HOW IT RELATES TO AVIATION INSURANCE
After decades of working on alternative medical legislation, the aviation alphabet
groups were finally able to convince the FAA to reform the third-class medical
system. On July 15, 2016, Congress passed the FAA Extension, Safety, Security Act
of 2016 (FESSA), which included BasicMed, and FAR Part 68-Requirements for
Operating Certain Small Aircraft Without A Medical Certificate, was born. Bottom
line is, BasicMed is an alternate way for pilots to fly without holding an FAA medical
certificate, provided of course, that they meet the requirements. Learn more.
SCHOLARSHIPS KEEP FLYING DREAM ALIVE IN CHALLENGING TIMES
An aviation philanthropic organization and a scholarship program for middle and
high school students are working together to make sure young people who want
to fly can continue reaching for their dreams even as the uncertainties created by
the coronavirus pandemic persist.
LATEST LAANC EXPANSION
The FAA recently made it easier for drone pilots to quickly and safely access controlled
airspace by adding 133 air traffic facilities to the Low Altitude Authorization and
Notification Capability (LAANC) system. LAANC is an automated application and
approval system for drone pilots requesting to fly below 400 feet in controlled airspace.
The service is accessible to all pilots who operate under the FAA's small drone rule.
