DPE ANSWERS FOR STUDENTS AND CFIS

I DON'T SEE WHY DRAGGING THE
AIRPLANE INTO THE TOUCHDOWN POINT
ON A SHORT FIELD LANDING IS AN ISSUE. MY
CFI TAUGHT IT TO ME THAT WAY AND I USED IT
ON MY TEST AND PASSED.
" My CFI said " or " My CFI taught me
this way " are two of the most dangerous
things an applicant can say on a practical test.
Not all CFIs teach everything perfectly. Bad
practices can creep into tests. The ACS on the
private pilot test indicates that an applicant
should demonstrate the skill of a short field
landing, including the skill to " Establish
the recommended approach and landing
configuration and airspeed, and adjust pitch
attitude and power as required to maintain
a stabilized approach. " A key point is the
" stabilized approach. " Throttle jockeying to
drag an aircraft in below the glide path and
then chopping the power to hit a point is not an
example of this. I encourage anyone who has
questions about how a short field landing will be
tested to review the information about short field
approaches in the airplane flying handbook and
the applicable ACS/PTS document.

IS IT ACCEPTABLE DURING AN INSTRUMENT
CHECKRIDE TO USE AN EFB? LIKE MOST
PILOTS, I WOULDN'T FLY WITHOUT IT.
They are absolutely allowed! In fact, a few
years ago, the FAA began training DPEs
that they " shall allow " applicants to use EFBs
for charting on practical tests. Now, that doesn't
mean a DPE may not ask what you would do if the
EFB failed, had a battery die, or had other related
problems-these are realistic questions that
simulate likely failures. An appropriate answer
might be having backup paper charts, but it could
also be having a charger or backup device. Just
because a DPE doesn't like EFBs, your testing
shouldn't be affected negatively by your choice
to use an EFB as an information source. In many
cases, EFBs offer much more data and information
than the traditional paper data sources many of us
previously carried.
