no need to race up to a stop light, stop sign, or
uncontrolled intersection and then slam on
the brakes in the last 30 feet. It's all a matter
of staying ahead of your vehicle, whether it is a
car, truck, boat, or airplane.
This also applies to managing your vehicle's
power and kinetic energy as you approach a
curve or turn on the highway. There is a freeway
offramp that I use that if the throttle is retarded
at a certain point, I can make the curve ahead
without touching the brake. That's " energy
management " and that is exactly what flying a
stabilized approach in the airport traffic pattern
and landing an airplane is all about.
Flying has increased my situational awareness
on the ground and in the air. When moving
the airplane onto an active taxiway, I have a
standard procedure that I pass on to my students
to ask, " Clear on the right? Clear on the left? "
Those are good questions to ask yourself at a
street intersection. My passenger wife calls
traffic on the right, while I call traffic on the left.
On a multilane street or freeway, I am constantly
scanning for traffic movements in all quadrants;
just like in an airplane, it is important to know
what is going on around you. This also means
looking ahead to determine if you might need to
alter your course and speed.
In an airplane, the variable might be weather
or overtaking a slower airplane. At the wheel of
your car, it might be emergency or police vehicles
on the side of the road, or brake lights coming on
a quarter mile ahead that might require a lane or
speed change. That's called being ahead of your
vehicle, whether you are in the air on the road.
A common sense understanding of the phrase
" you're behind the airplane " can be summed up in
two quotes that pilots have heard over the years
that follow and emphasize very well the point of
this discussion. " Remember, you fly the airplane
with your head, not your hands and feet. " " Never
let the airplane take you some place your brain
didn't get to five minutes earlier. " Now, ask other
flight students if they understand what it means
to be " behind the airplane. " You understand how
important it is to flight proficiency and aviation
safety to avoid " getting behind the airplane. "

STAYING AHEAD OF THE AIRPLANE IS A
MENTAL GAME. IT IS ABOUT APPLYING
YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE AIRPLANE'S
PILOT OPERATING HANDBOOK (POH) AND
INCORPORATING IT IN YOUR MIND INTO
THE FLIGHT ENVIRONMENT BEFORE THE
AIRPLANE NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION.
