Q
A
HAVE YOU EVER HAD A REAL EMERGENCY
DURING A CHECKRIDE? IF SO, WHAT
HAPPENS TO THE STUDENT? IF THEY DO THE
RIGHT PROCEDURE, CAN THEY STILL PASS?
Many DPEs have had real emergencies
on practical tests! In the event of a real
emergency occurrence on a practical test (assuming
the applicant was not the cause of the emergency)
the testing is discontinued and typically the
applicant and the DPE will act as a crew to best
handle the emergency for the safest outcome. This
doesn't have to be a major emergency such as an
engine failure, it could be something simple such
as a failure of a required instrument, a flaps motor,
or a fuel gauge. In cases such as this a return to
the airport may be safely completed many times.
If a test is discontinued to handle an emergency,
the handling of that emergency successfully does
not mean the applicant has automatically passed
the test. The ACS/PTS requirements must all be
met for a test to be completed. The applicant may
choose, if time and aircraft resources are available,
to continue the test the same day or at a subsequent
time. The good news, a real emergency will typically
be able to be counted instead of needing to simulate
another one if it occurs on a practical test!
Q
A
WHAT ARE SOME SCARY TOPICS FOR THE
INSTRUMENT CHECKRIDE PLEASE?
Anything that would result in you crashing
into something you didn't see and dying!
OK, seriously though, the main scary topic for
instrument checkrides is whenever an applicant
doesn't understand the " rules of the road " that
keep them from doing exactly that. Instrument
flying is highly technical and structured. It is
that structure that keeps aircraft in line and
away from hitting each other and other things.
The scariest topics for me as an examiner for
applicants are those that relate to the procedural
intricacies, the communications requirements,
and the emergency procedures that are in place
to help deal with any emergencies to keep you
from " bumping into things you didn't see " as a
friend of mine likes to say.
NUGGETS OF WISDOM FROM ASI'S CFIS:
ALWAYS REMEMBER THE THREE D'S.
On a checkride, don't do anything dumb,
different, or dangerous. As a former evaluator,
it always surprised me when someone was
trying a new technique for the first time on their
checkride. A buddy told them the night before
about a good technique and so they tried it out on
the checkride!
