On the downwind leg you must also think about
wind drift and flying a rectangular traffic
pattern. Another way of describing this is
simply to be cognizant of situational awareness
and thinking about planning ahead. It is also
basic problem solving, gathering information,
planning action for what's next, and taking
action if necessary. Constant assessment of
where you are at in the pattern is part of " staying
ahead of the airplane. " You need an ongoing
awareness of other traffic in the pattern which is
a constantly evolving situation at busy airports.
This adds the element of ATC communications
to the pilot workload.
WE CAN DISCUSS AND CHAIR FLY " WHAT'S NEXT " AND
UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF " STAYING AHEAD OF
THE AIRPLANE " ON THE GROUND BEFORE WE FLY THE
AIRPLANE.
As you know as a flight instructor, flying the
downwind leg of the airport traffic pattern
is the time to be thinking about configuring
the airplane and controlling the airspeed for
the approach and landing. This involves an
engine power change, deployment of wing flaps,
airspeed control, and the proper ground track
despite the winds aloft at pattern level. Have
your students make these calls verbally. Staying
ahead of the airplane is a mental game. It is about
applying your knowledge of the airplane's pilot
operating handbook (POH) and incorporating it
in your mind into the flight environment before
the airplane needs your attention.
Emphasize to your students the importance of
thinking ahead of the airplane that is essential
to executing a cross-country flight. If you do not
plan your airplane's time, speed, and distance
to descend to an airport, you might find yourself
too close, too high, and too fast for the landing
pattern. This is a classic example of when those
around you will inform you, " You're behind
the airplane. " This is another example that
is magnified when you move from a Cessna
152 to a Cessna 210 or from a Piper Archer to
a Beechcraft Bonanza, or to any twin-engine
airplane. Just think about the required forward
thinking needed to fly at the speeds of a business
jet or airliner. For your students, this puts
" Staying ahead of the airplane " in a motivating
and exciting context.
Developing multifaceted situational
perceptions is an essential skill that must be
learned and mastered in the early stages of
learning to fly. Flight instructors often use
analogies of common experiences non-pilots
are familiar with. You can utilize your flight
students' experience driving an automobile
for ground based situational training. For
example, I've noticed that as a pilot I am more
attuned to the road ahead and to make speed
adjustments to avoid heavy braking. There's
