TWO VS ONE-IS A TWO-PILOT CREW SAFER THAN SINGLE-PILOT OPERATIONS?
Excellent article. I particularly agreed with the benefit of a second pilot in case of a
situation, but also, the risk of an overly relaxed environment where important tasks such
as tank changes can be missed. GA pilots might benefit from an understanding of how
the commercial airlines handle exactly this. (How does the author/instructor approach
briefing two-pilot flights?)

In Commercial operations, pilots are taught to use specific flows, checklists and are
given a thick book of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that must be adhered to
while flying. These resources help eliminate some of the potential for mistakes and
complacency but not all. I approach GA and commercial briefings in a similar manner.
At the start of the trip, I would brief the other pilot that I follow and run the flight deck
under the SOP and expect the same from them. Not only is it the way your company
wants it done but it helps set expectations of each other. Adhering to sterile cockpit
rules also keeps pilots on task during high workload times. I stress open communication
and encourage the other pilot to speak up if they see or feel that something may be
wrong. I remind myself and the other pilot that either of us can make a mistake and it is
important to work together and maintain vigilance to have a successful flight.

I disagree completely, I have eight people in the back and I have a heart attack and die...so
eight more people die with me. You got to be kidding.

The point of the article was that two pilots instead of just one does not automatically
make for a safer flight. Both have risks that need to be addressed. You have clearly
assigned a very high risk value to the hazard of flying single pilot. Consider that there
are many situations where a pilot will fly alone. A CFI instructing a primary student
operates as sole pilot. Some smaller charter companies run under single pilot operations
and there are plenty of pilot airplane owners who are the only pilot in the family and
often travel with family together. Whether you choose two-pilot or one-pilot operations,
there are going to be risks that must be identified and addressed each flight. We all have
our own personal minimums, and they will and should differ from each other.
