Hooray! I enthusiastically contacted HPN tower
and we landed uneventfully. However, now I had
to sort out the radio issue with the avionics shop
on the field.
So, what happened? " You should just unplug the
handheld mic if you use the yoke-mounted pushto-talk
switch, " said the shop person chuckling.
He'd seen it before. The handheld mic was
clipped between the pilot and passenger seats
and it was plugged in. At times during the flight
to HPN, my passenger's left leg would hit the
mic activating the push-to-talk switch and thus
causing us to step on ATC radio transmissions.
So, I remembered to unplug the mic, and our
return to home base went without issues. Soon
after that flight I laminated a small ATC light
gun signal card to carry in my purse, just in case!
I learned a couple of things from this event.
While it wasn't an emergency, the situation
took me by surprise and it was troubling. I had
to collect my wits quickly, try to troubleshoot
the problem, and come up with a doable plan of
action while flying and being responsible for my
passenger. Although I did come up with a Plan
B and Plan C, I was relieved to not have to find
and divert to a nontowered airport that I was
not familiar with. Also, I wish that during my
initial training, I would have been exposed to a
simulated lost comm situation on one of my dual
cross-country flights. We are trained to deal
with all kinds of failures and we practice these
simulated emergencies in the air. Adding a lost
comm " emergency " to the list of practice flights
can prepare your student in the event it really
happens to them.
You might want to share this two-sided ATC
Light Gun Signal card from the Air Safety
Institute with your students so they can review
it periodically and clip it to their kneeboard to be
prepared just in case you give them a simulated
lost comm situation. Who knows? It could come
in handy when they're on their solo cross country
flight to a towered airport. Enjoy!
