an airport for landing without radios is whether the airport is towered or
nontowered. What a nice opportunity to include in your lesson a refresher on
how to approach and land at a towered airport following light gun signals.
If your students are used to only flying at airports that have landing guidance
lighting, such as a VASI or PAPI, it's essential that they gain some experience
at an airport without those tools at their disposal. This forces them to rely on
their aircraft knowledge in order to stay on airspeed and altitude, descend by
visual references at the airport, and really get to know their airplane and how
to control it when low and slow. The ability to recognize the proper approach
angle without a VASI or PAPI is a core airmanship skill. Night, low visibility,
and down- or up-sloping runways are factors that affect that core airmanship.
Practicing will help your students build confidence as they are forced to trust
their skill as they make power and pitch adjustments, rather than trusting
those beautiful lights on the side of the runway's end.
Technology in aviation has proven to be life-saving. It helps us identify
terrain and aircraft in our vicinity, reminds us when we are low on fuel,
provides airport and approach info at the touch of a button, and so much
more. While teaching your students all of the remarkable ways that
technology makes flying safer, also teach them how to maintain situational
awareness and safety of flight if any of those high-tech devices fails.
Preparing for the worst-case scenario is what we train for, while hoping to
never need to put those skills to the test. Your student may one day thank
you for teaching them how to return to the basics.

LOW VISIBILITY, AND DOWN- OR UP-SLOPING RUNWAYS ARE
FACTORS THAT AFFECT THAT CORE AIRMANSHIP.
