WHAT IS YOUR MOST FUN CHECKRIDE OR INSTRUCTOR STORY?
One of my absolute favorites is actually from a student of mine.
When he returned from his private pilot test the DPE asked to chat
with me for a moment. Nervous and curious what my student had done,
we walked into the hangar and he told me what had happened. During the
flight, the student had asked the DPE to hold his charts for a bit. The DPE
had responded, " I am not here to help you, what would you do if I wasn't
here? " The response from my student was priceless, humorous, and set the
examiner back for a moment, " Well, if you weren't here I would have an open
seat next to me to put them on. " He followed that with a question, " Would
you like to get out so I have an open seat, or hold the charts? " The DPE said it
kind of threw him. Obviously the applicant was in charge of his flight deck.
We both had a good chuckle at it.

DO YOU SEE INSTRUMENT CANDIDATES WHO HAVE NEVER
FLOWN IN A CLOUD?
We definitely see applicants for instrument ratings who have zero
experience in actual IMC conditions. I know some will say that
exposure to IMC should be required, but that can be a very challenging thing
to accomplish in the course of training. For example, where I live, we get a lot
of " lake effect " clouds in the fall and winter. While it is a great opportunity to
fly in the clouds, it is also a really high risk endeavor when temperatures drop
and those clouds have lots of icing in them. No CFI worth their salt would
put their students (or themselves) into that situation. In places where there
aren't lots of stable cloud decks, the most common IMC weather might be
thunderstorms-another no-go for a good CFI and their students. So, it really
comes down to available weather conditions to safely introduce a student
to actual IMC during their training. I always encourage CFIs to fly with
their instrument students in actual IMC when it can be done safely and in
a positive teaching experience. Because of the challenges mentioned above,
many seeking their instrument ratings end up training " under the hood " and
have zero actual IMC experience when they complete the rating.
