EARLY ANALYSIS
TWO mIdAIR COLLISIONS BY MACHTELD SMITH
Recently, we have had two midair collisions that
occurred one month apart-one at a towered airport,
one at a nontowered airport. Tragically, none of the
occupants in the accidents survived.
In the AOPA Air Safety Institute's Early Analysis videos
of the two midair collisions ASI makes a preliminary
assessment of the accident, addressing notable portions
of the tragic flights and highlighting areas the NTSB
will likely investigate to determine a probable cause.
In addition, the videos remind us how we can improve
our awareness of other traffic-either flying in the
pattern or entering the traffic pattern.
First, when you see any kind of conflict developing, act
early. Second, the FAA recommends that VFR traffic
enter the pattern at pattern altitude in a standard
pattern entry 45 degrees to the downwind leg. This
improves situational awareness of aircraft already in
the pattern on crosswind, downwind, base, and final.
It also provides time to identify potentially dangerous
situations and act, such as for example extending the
downwind leg for an aircraft on final and then turning
base after the aircraft has passed you.
In addition, ASI recommends doing a belly check
when you're coming off an extended turn or when
turning from base to final. That belly check provides
one last opportunity to check that final approach is
clear and there's nobody coming straight in that will
be a conflict before you go belly up and turn onto the
final approach leg.
