CHIEF'S CORNER
HAVING AND
THE BENEFIT USING A GAME PLAN
S OF AFTA BY JOHN COLLINS
I RECENTLY TRIED SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING I'D NEVER
DONE BEFORE, AND I MUST ADMIT IT WAS KIND OF FUN EVEN
IF I WASN'T SURE WHAT I WAS DOING. A friend of mine asked
me the other day if I would be interested in joining his fantasy
football league, " since you're a Bills fan and all that. " While
it is true-I am a life-long Buffalo Bills fan even in those four
second-place Super Bowl attempts-I won't lie and say I know
everything about anything Bills, nor would I say I'm part of
the Bills Mafia. But once you're in...well you're in and there's no
getting out. Blame it on growing up in Western New York and
being fiercely proud of my original slice of heaven. For the record,
I'm also a Toronto Blue Jays fan, but that's another column.
I TELL THIS STORY TO DRAW A COMPARISON BETWEEN
MY EXPERIENCE AS A LEARNER AND MY NEWEST
PRIVATE PILOT LEARNER.
Why are you talking about this, Collins? Well, like some who
come to us to learn to fly, I felt somewhat out of place in this
fantasy football league. My friend portrayed it as simple and
easy to catch on how it works. His love for the whole process
could not have been clearer and his excitement and enthusiasm
was infectious. So, there I was, sitting in front of my computer
with a cheat sheet I'd sourced off the internet, late to the draft
because bell choir was over late. The draft program had already
made my first four picks. I made my first pick and congratulated
myself on being part of the big show. Nine picks later I had my
team, my defensive strategy, and a potential matchup for the
first game of the season. To celebrate my accomplishment, I
named my team " Fakin' It 'til I Make It! " We'll see how the
season goes.
I tell this story to draw a comparison between my experience
as a learner and my newest private pilot learner. He's had some
exposure to general aviation (hard not to working at AOPA)
and has a pretty good idea of what he wants to do after he gets
his certificate-he has family and friends he'd like to visit and
it will be quicker by air than by car. He has some mechanical
aptitude as well and rides a motorcycle. All this to say he has
something of an idea about what he's getting into. He's heard
the pitch about the joy of flying; in fact, his first couple of
entries in his logbook aren't your normal training lessons-
one is having some fun in an Extra 300 with ASI Senior Vice
President Richard McSpadden. But as we sat down to discuss
the first lesson and how this whole process will unfold, I could
see that there were some details to flesh out and I wanted to
make sure he has a good grasp of that pathway to success.
