HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SEE A DIVERSION OR LOST
PROCEDURE ON THE CHECKRIDE?
This depends on the scenario. A DPE might ask an applicant what they
would do in the event of unexpected weather conditions, a closed runway
on their intended destination airport, a mechanical concern on their aircraft,
or any number of other real-world scenarios.
What the scenario is will greatly dictate how an applicant might respond.
This is a great opportunity for the applicant to ask for clarification or details
about what the examiner is asking if it is not clear. When they are clear on
the scenario for the condition, a good skill here to demonstrate is critical
thinking for the options available. If the DPE says, " Hey, I know we were going
to go to airport XYZ, but it looks like a thunderstorm has popped up, " this is a
great opportunity for an applicant to demonstrate their ability to determine
weather conditions in flight and at other potential landing locations-and
how they would then go there.
A DPE might ask an applicant what they would do if they were going to back to
their airport of origin (where the checkride started) and the ATIS indicated
a temporary closure of the airport due to a crashed aircraft on the runway.
This might be a good instance where an applicant could show their ability to
transition to a nearby airport to land until their airport was open again.
Another scenario might be a DPE asking the applicant what they would do
with a rough running engine, a partial power loss, or any other maintenance
concern. This could allow the chance to demonstrate their knowledge of
systems and how that might affect their choice of diversion. If you had a
rough running engine would you fly 30 miles back to your home airport or go
directly to the one that is 10 miles away? What if that closer airport's runway
is a lot shorter and doesn't have a fire department?
If you determined one magneto had failed, how far would you fly on that one
magneto?
What if your flaps motor had failed? Would you go back to your home airport
that has a 3,000-foot runway or would you go somewhere with a longer
runway? Thinking about how flaps affect your short field capability here
could be a valid diversion logic discussion.
I think the main point here is that there isn't just one correct answer.
Hopefully DPEs in your area are mixing up the scenarios and looking for
applicants to think critically, evaluate the situation, take their rote knowledge
of systems, and apply application and correlation levels of learning to come up
with a good response to a given scenario.
