BE WINTER WEATHER WISE
PREPARE FOR THE COLd WEATHER SEASON BY MACHTELD SMITH
As I'm writing this, the AOPA Air Safety Institute (ASI)
just completed its Early Analysis video of a Beechcraft
King Air that crashed into a car dealership parking lot
on October 18, 2022 (see the Early Analysis: N515GK
sidebar accompanying this article). In the video, ASI
makes a preliminary assessment of the accident,
addressing notable portions of the tragic flight to help
pilots understand what is known about the accident.
ASI also looks at factors, including the possibility of
icing, that are likely to be a subject of the investigation
by the National Transportation Safety Board.
There's no doubt that flying into icing conditions can
be treacherous-pilots flying aircraft not equipped for
flight into known icing must avoid it, and those flying
aircraft that are equipped must check the operation
of their equipment, understand its limitations, and
maintain proficiency on how to use it.
As a reminder, cold temperatures, low clouds,
precipitation, and icing present unique challenges for
all pilots and aircraft. So, it's paramount to conduct a
thorough preflight, obtain a comprehensive briefing,
and stay alert to changing conditions during departure,
while in flight, and on approach and landing. Ice can
build up in minutes-if you encounter icing, ask ATC
for priority handling and deviate to exit the conditions.
Be aware that if ice builds up on the aircraft's tail, this
ice accumulation is often not seen by the pilot. Also,
when the autopilot is engaged it may be difficult to
recognize subtle nuances in the aircraft's controls
created by iced-over surfaces. So, if you suspect any
icing, disengage the autopilot while holding the control
yoke firmly.
