WE ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT AFTA HERE ON THE FLIGHT TRAINING TEAM,
AND MANY OF YOU SEEM TO BE AS WELL, BASED ON THE STEADY STREAM
OF REQUESTS WE GET FOR NEW ACCOUNTS. I've had the opportunity to
speak with several of you on the phone, doing a little hangar talking about our
experience as CFIs and answering your questions about AFTA. In this and a
few upcoming issues of the CFI to CFI newsletter, I want to take the time to
answer some of the most common questions we get as you begin using your
new account.
TWO EMAIL ACCOUNTS?
Why do we need two email accounts for logging into the system?
My answer always started with helping people understand the
three-role structure behind AFTA, which has been a reason for
why separate logins are required. Luckily, this question will soon
be moot as our information technology department is working
to create a new system for AFTA that will allow you to log in
with just one email-the one you use for getting into the AOPA
website. But even as this becomes history, it's useful for new
users to understand that AFTA has three main parts depending
on your role in the system. There is the CFI app, the Account
Owner web portal, and the Student web portal. Each has its
function and should be relatively intuitive when considering the
typical roles in the flight training process.
THE CFI APP
The CFI app is designed to be used in the cockpit and before/after each
flight. It helps us with our typical CFI tasks: logging time, pre-/postflight
briefings, and grading the flight's activities as we teach. Pretty
straightforward. Of course, it also does that really cool, " magical " thing
that is new to flight training: It adaptively generates the next lesson based
on your student's progress as graded by you during each session. Why have
a separate app rather than a web portal? Because we don't typically have
internet access in the airplane! We want to be sure that you can use AFTA
while you fly.
ACCOUNT OWNER WEB PORTAL
The Account Owner web portal was originally conceived for the typical
flight school owner's role. You can probably visualize it: working in the
office, assigning new students to the school's CFI roster, and watching the
overall progress of the student's training and CFI's performance. But we
didn't anticipate the overwhelming response from independent CFIs-
sometimes leading to confusion as they don't identify with that type of
larger flight training operation. The good news is that independent CFIs
are schools too! (Remember the TSA training we do every year?) School
owners/managers and independent CFIs will find the Account Owner
portal useful for adding and managing students' accounts, checking their
progress, and seeing how your overall flight training operation is running.
