TAKING A FLIGHT REVIEW EVERY 24 MONTHS IS A
REQUIREMENT FOR MOST PILOTS, AND FOR MANY, IT
IS THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY TO HONE THEIR SKILLS.
But setting up a flight review that satisfies regulatory
requirements and meets specific training goals isn't
always practical.
With that in mind, the AOPA Air Safety Institute
updated its Focused Flight Review program last summer
to make sure that completing a Focused Flight Review
profile is more efficient, effective, and affordable.
Taking a hard look at the program's content and usability,
ASI decided to sunset some profiles and consolidate their
activities into other profiles. In addition, ASI streamlined
and reformatted the activities into cross-country
scenarios and added a new " Beyond the Basics " profile
to help pilots improve their ability to safely maneuver
in dynamic flight environments. The updated Focused
Flight Review program now offers pilots and CFIs a robust
three-step approach to completing a flight review in an
organized yet engaging and flexible manner.
Pilots who need to schedule a flight review can choose
from six flight profiles: Positive Aircraft Control; IFR
Proficiency; Beyond the Basics-LTT and E3; Mountain
and Backcountry Flying; Seaplanes; and Helicopters.
Each one addresses problem and high-risk areas intended
to help drive down the accident rate. In addition, the
profiles include a printable PDF kneeboard version
for specific flight maneuvers and tasks. Each one also
presents the opportunity to comprehensively assess and
discuss weather, aircraft systems, and other topics in FAR
Part 91 as required by FAR 61.56 - Flight Review.
to safely operate under IFR and respond to abnormal
and emergency situations within the national airspace
system in IMC. Additionally, this profile includes the
required areas of operation and tasks specified in the
Instrument Rating Airman Certification Standards to
satisfy FAR 61.57(d) - Instrument Proficiency Check.
BEYOND THE BASICS-LTT AND E3
This advanced profile incorporates concepts from
Rich Stowell's Learn to Turn (LTT) program and Ed
Wischmeyer's Expanded Envelope Exercises (E3) to
further enhance a pilot's ability to recognize and prevent
scenarios that commonly lead to loss of control. The
review places emphasis on the pilot's control inputs,
coordinated flight, and managing distractions. It also
includes one maneuver from the Commercial Pilot -
Airplane ACS: accelerated stalls.
Here's a snapshot of what the six areas cover.
POSITIVE AIRCRAFT CONTROL
This profile includes planning and discussion of an
actual or simulated cross-country flight to help pilots
improve their ability to maneuver safely in dynamic flight
environments. Maneuvers such as slow flight, stalls, and
others have been incorporated into the legs of the crosscountry
flight scenario.
IFR PROFICIENCY
Planning and discussion of an actual or simulated
cross-country flight helps pilots improve their ability
MOUNTAIN AND BACKCOUNTRY FLYING
Designed for pilots who already have mountain/
backcountry experience, this profile includes planning
and discussion of an actual or simulated cross-country
flight to help pilots gain a better understanding of safely
flying in mountainous areas. The profile pays extra
attention to operating in high density-altitude flight
and flying to and from airports in remote areas that may
have limited support facilities.
SEAPLANES
Specifically designed for seaplane pilots, this profile
includes planning and discussion of an actual or
simulated seaplane flight at multiple bodies of water
