CHANGES TO INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION PROPOSED
Much to the relief of aviation advocates (including AOPA), a long-sought
package of changes to flight instructor certification regulations-
including removal of certificate expiration dates-was proposed by the
FAA on May 23, substantially a favorable response to petitions that AOPA
filed starting in 1999. Learn more.
SEAPLANE SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
Seaplane accidents, while few, represent an area of general
aviation where targeted training could pay real dividends. That's the
takeaway from a new seaplane accident analysis report by the AOPA
Air Safety Institute. The report offers a detailed analysis of accidents,
including accident causes and findings. It concludes with a training
and prevention discussion and recommendations to reduce seaplane

AIR CHARTER SAFETY FOUNDATION LAUNCHES SCHOLARSHIP
IN HONOR OF FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ALUMNUS
RUSS LAWTON
The Air Transportation Safety Foundation has established a fellowship
in honor of its first director of safety, Florida Institute of Technology
alumnus Russ Lawton. After a long illness, Lawton died on January 14 at
the age of 70. Lawton spent more than a decade with the Aircraft Owners
and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the AOPA Air Safety Foundation,
eventually becoming Vice President of Operations. Read more.
