BUILDING BLOCK BENEFITS

AS I WATCHED MY SON AND HIS HIGH SCHOOL
SOCCER TEAM PLAY A GAME LAST WEEKEND, I was
remembering his early days learning the sport of soccer
as an elementary school student. At that time, he was
learning the rules of the game-basic skills like dribbling
and passing, and teamwork. Now, ten years later with
the basics mastered, he and his teammates are refining
the way they play the game by learning advanced skills
and strategies that have led them to become a successful
team. They are building on the skills already learned
over the years.
ANOTHER BENEFIT OF USING THE BUILDING
BLOCK METHOD IS THAT IT IS A WAY TO
INCREASE THE STUDENT'S SELF-CONFIDENCE.
SHE WILL BECOME MORE CONFIDENT AS SHE
SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES EACH BUILDING
BLOCK TASK ON HER WAY TO THE LARGER GOAL.
Learning how to fly progresses in much the same way. As
flight instructors, we teach using a proven building block
method. We don't expect a new student to know how to
do turns around a point, but as she learns aircraft control
and wind corrections she is achieving the building blocks
on her way to proficiency in ground reference maneuvers.
Chapter 7 of the FAA's Aviation Instructor's Handbook
is an excellent resource to aid in planning instructional
activities. The handbook emphasizes the building block
approach as a component of lesson planning. This helps
to break down each large goal (such as first solo) into
bite-sized blocks to incorporate into each lesson, each
building upon the previous, until the student achieves
her first solo or other major goal.
While the tasks that need to be accomplished in order
to solo are the same for each student, the way the
lessons are constructed can vary to tailor them to
each individual student's previous knowledge.
FAA Aviation Instructor's Handbook: These blocks of
learning, which should include coordinated ground and
flight training, lead up to the first solo.

who works as an air traffic controller will be very
different from the way it's taught to a student who has
