WHAT'S THE RUSH?
LINGER LONGER AT THE AIRPORT BY KEVIN GARRISON
I LEARNED MUCH ABOUT AVIATION BY SITTING ON THE RAMP AND
TALKING WITH OTHER PILOTS, MECHANICS, AND INSTRUCTORS. Many
pilots, including me, learned to fly through osmosis. We were allowed
during the pre-911-attack days to hang around airports and flight lines as
often as we could and for as long as we wanted.
There is nothing quite like total immersion in a subject if you want to learn
it for a lifetime. Most foreign language schools, including military-run ones,
would agree. Quite a bit of learning value comes from constantly being
there-bathing in the culture and facts of any endeavor.
Yet, most flight schools and instructors seem to parse out their time with
students very carefully. Students also seem to limit their time at the airport
and the flight line very tightly and, once there, appear eager to get away and
go home.
THE FOREMOST REASON FOR WANTING YOUR STUDENTS/CUSTOMERS TO SPEND
MORE TIME AT THE AIRPORT IS TO GIVE THEM A MORE PROFOUND EDUCATION IN
AVIATION THAN CAN BE FOUND DURING A THREE-HOUR WEEKLY APPOINTMENT.
This problem came into focus recently when I went to a nearby aviation
degree-granting college to plan a safety stand down with the instructors.
As I drove into the parking lot, I noticed that students were either rushing
into the building as though they were late or running out of it like their
empennage was on fire.
Do you encourage your students to stay for a while before and after their
lessons, or do you rush them out the door and move on to your next paid
hour of flight instruction?
If you hurry them along, I hope you do not do so because you think you
have no time for them. Even though they are still on the premises, you are
not obligated to entertain or instruct them, and you can go on to your next
paying student on the schedule, happy knowing that the student you asked
to hang around for a while will learn something.
Familiarity with flight instruction does not breed contempt. It fosters
camaraderie, confidence, learning, and competence.
Why would you want a bunch of your students lingering and lurking about
your school and the airport?
Aside from the obvious benefit that your pupils get from spending
significant time at the airport and immersing themselves in the lifestyle,
your school's revenue will increase for the simple reason that you can't sell
things like advanced flight training to people who aren't there or are only
there for an appointment.
Increased income is one thing, but the foremost reason for wanting your
students/customers to spend more time at the airport is to give them a
more profound education in aviation than can be found during a three-hour
weekly appointment.
