TEACHING COLLISION AVOIDANCE PART 2
GAMIFyING SITUATIONAL AWARENESS BY WILLIAM E. DUBOIS
BUILDING PICTURES FROM MODELS
The FAA's training for air traffic controllers breaks situational awareness
into two components: model and picture. Model is defined as a person's
understanding of the environment, while picture is a person's understanding
of what is happening in that environment-right now.
Model understanding needs to be excellent for the picture to be properly
constructed, so that is where you, as a CFI, must start. And as the majority
of midair collisions happen near airports, students need exceptional model
understanding of the airport environment, especially the traffic pattern,
before they can develop a clear picture and become situationally aware.
IN TEACHING COLLISION AVOIDANCE PART 1 we covered how to introduce
your students to the risk of midair collisions, and we talked about how to
teach proper scanning techniques to keep them-and you-safer in the sky.
In this second installment of our four-part series, the focus is on teaching
situational awareness, and we have some innovative ideas for you to try out.
So, let's review how the traffic pattern is historically taught to new students.
I'll bet when you were a student, your instructor quickly drew the pattern
on a whiteboard, labeled the legs in sloppy penmanship, and then moved on.
Oh great. A cartoon two-dimensional vertical representation of an invisible
three dimensional horizontal structure. Yeah. That'll work. It's no wonder
new students get confused on approach to an airport. I challenge you to
do better.
