CFI certificate expires on 1/31/2024. My renewal window
is from 10/1/2023 to 1/31/2024. As long as I complete the
renewal course and the paperwork on or after 10/1/2023
and before 1/31/2024, my new CFI certificate will have an
expiration date printed on it of 1/31/2026. However, let me
attempt to dispel the persistent myth that if you complete
the renewal course outside your renewal window, and
submit your paperwork inside that window, you'll keep the
same renewal date. No, it doesn't work that way, sorry to say.
You will end up with a new renewal date based on the date
you signed your application because the FAA requires that
the application must be signed within 90 days of completing
the renewal activity. Please complete your renewal course
and application within your renewal window to eliminate
the chance of getting a new renewal month on your CFI
certificate. (At some point, CFI certificates with printed
expiration dates will become a thing of the past, like the
paper pilot certificate.)

before the old one expires. Third, if you're signing learner
applications in IACRA as a recommending instructor, or
doing checkrides as a DPE, the IACRA system will not keep
you from doing these things like it might if you squeeze your
renewal in just under the deadline and then try to work in
the IACRA system the following day.

However you renew, whether by a FIRC, instructional
activity with an 80-percent pass rate, serving as a company
check pilot, chief flight instructor, company check
airman or flight instructor in a Part 121 or 135 operation,
completing five phases of WINGS with five different pilots,
adding a new instructor rating-or even taking a practical
test for one of your existing ratings (different from a
reinstatement ride)-I would strongly recommend doing it
as early in your renewal window as possible.
